It's International #ShirazDay! ๐
Syrah and Shiraz refer to the same grape variety, originally from the Southern Rhรดne region of France. However, the name changes depending on the region it's grown in. Despite sharing the same name, the wines produced can be remarkably different.
Syrah grapes are small, thick-skinned, and dark in color, known for their disease resistance and adaptability to various climates. They thrive best in warm to moderate climates and do not fare well in the cold. Syrah wines are robust, tannic, and spicy, making them ideal to pair with strong-flavored meats like wild boar, rabbit, and game. These hearty wines require equally hearty dishes to balance their intense flavor profile.
Shiraz, on the other hand, is what Australians call Syrah. Australian Shiraz has distinct aromas and pronounced tannins. It pairs wonderfully with spicy barbecue dishes, especially ribs or even kangaroo meat, a somewhat unusual but traditional Australian pairing. In essence, whether you're savoring a French Syrah or an Australian Shiraz, you're experiencing the unique expressions of the same grape adapted to its terroir.
So, what's your preference: the spice-filled Syrah or the bold, expressive Australian Shiraz? Let us know in the comments! ๐ท

Last night a friend opened some very special birthyear wines for his 40th including this magnum of 1983 Margaux.
Today I ran my fastest 10k of the year.
Ipso facto, 1983 Margaux is a sports drink of choice.
