🚨📣 From today, a complaints scheme for academics, university staff and visiting speakers is operational.

This means that academics can take their complaints directly to the regulator, the Office for Students (OfS), if they believe their free speech rights have been infringed. Importantly, it is free.

Universities will now face fines of up to £500,000 or 2 per cent of their income if they fail to protect free speech on campus.

This has been a long time coming. In one of her first acts as Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson paused the implementation of this provision of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023 (HEFSA). After the Free Speech Union threatened legal action, she partially U-turned.

We welcome the fact that Ms Phillipson ultimately kept her word, but the battle for free speech on campus is far from over. Unlike under the HEFSA passed by the previous Conservative Government, students are unable to access the complaints scheme.

The fight for free speech continues.

Parliament returns today, and the new Prime Minister will face MPs for the first time.

The Free Speech Union will work tirelessly to hold this Government to account on free speech.

We are urging Andy Burnham to drop the draft bill to ban conversion practices, which is so broadly drawn that it could see parents, therapists and religious leaders face up to two years in prison for having well-intentioned conversations with gender-confused children.

The FSU is also calling on the Prime Minister to ditch David Lammy’s plan to slash our precious right to trial by jury. Research carried out by the FSU shows that those charged with speech-related offences are almost twice as likely to be acquitted in a Crown Court by a jury as they are in a magistrates’ court without one.

We are also calling on the Prime Minister to abandon plans for an Islamophobia tsar and drop the definition of “anti-Muslim hostility”, which has already been weaponised by activists and some of his own MPs to silence legitimate criticism of Islam.

There are many more things we would like to see, but these are our initial demands as the Prime Minister takes to the despatch box for the first time.

The fight for free speech has never been more important. The free speech crisis we are witnessing is a national embarrassment.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has deleted every response submitted to the consultation conducted by the Working Group tasked with drafting the Government’s definition of Islamophobia.

What are they hiding? Were extremist groups given an opportunity to influence the reintroduction of a blasphemy law in Britain — for Islam alone?

At the start of the year, the Free Speech Union revealed that all five members of the Working Group had troubling links to Islamist groups — including the Muslim Council of Britain and MEND.

The public deserves to know what happened.

Parents already have tools to protect their children. Children do not buy smartphones for themselves. Adults choose to provide devices and decide how they are used.

If a parent wants parental controls, they can enable them today.

A cow burps 100kg of methane a year, and every atom of the carbon in it came out of the air above the field.

Nobody disputes the 100kg. Big number, sounds awful, looks tremendous on a placard.

The question is where it came from. Not in a spiritual sense. Physically. Atom by atom. Where was that carbon 18 months ago, before it was a burp in Shropshire?

In the air.

Carbon dioxide over a field, until a blade of ryegrass grabbed it, stuck a bit of sunlight to it, and made itself out of it. A cow ate the grass. The cow did what a cow does. The methane went up, sat about for 12 years, broke down into carbon dioxide again, and came back down onto the same field, where the grass grabbed it a second time.

That is a lap.

Coal is a different animal. You dig it out of the ground, where it has been minding its own business since the Carboniferous, set fire to it, and it joins the atmosphere for the first time in 300 million years. A meaningful chunk is still up there in the year 2325. Nothing takes it back out. There is no grass on earth that grows coal.

Fossil carbon is a taxi with the meter running for three centuries.

Remove every cow in Britain tomorrow. Lorries in, gates open, the lot. Is there less carbon in the sky?

No. The grass still grows. The grass still dies. It rots, or it burns on a moor in July, and the carbon goes up anyway, having produced precisely nothing on the way. You have deleted the part of the cycle that made dinner.

And GWP100, the number on every press release, overstates the warming from a steady herd by about a factor of 4. The physicists who built the replacement have been saying so for years, to a room that would rather not hear it.

The cow is the only part of the carbon cycle that hands you dinner on the way round.

Go and look at a hill. Something has to eat it.

I just read a paper talking about "folic acid deficiency" causing neural tube defects.

There is no such thing.

It's like saying "statin deficiency" or "vaccine deficiency".

Folate is a vitamin you can be deficient in.
Folic acid is a drug.

So the petition regarding the mandatory addition of folic acid to UK non-wholemeal wheat flour has to gain at least 500 signatures/day to have a chance of reaching 100,000 by 8/12. At that we can assume a good number of consumers are aware and it might get a debate in HOC
