#ONStorm#ONwx ⚠️ Air Quality Update for Southern Ontario
VALID: 12:30 PM - June 8, 2023
Although today was anticipated to be one of the most challenging in terms of air quality due to wildfire smoke, we're relieved to see that the scenario has not been as dire as expected. Central Ontario and the GTA are still enduring high to very high levels of pollution, but the smoke hasn't been as thick as models predicted. Thankfully, we've been spared the 'apocalyptic' orange-tinted skies experienced by New York City yesterday. We are even seeing that the Ottawa Valley in Eastern Ontario is currently enjoying a 'good' air quality rating as it gets a respite from the smoke.
Why this unexpected shift? The reality is that forecasting wildfire smoke is a relatively novel challenge for forecasters. Many of the data inputs we're currently using were only recently added to models, leaving us with limited historical data for comparison. It appears that the reduced thickness of the smoke can be attributed to the fires over Quebec not flaring up and producing as much smoke as anticipated. Additionally, cloud cover and some rainfall have aided in clearing the air somewhat.
However, we're still facing very poor air quality, so it's important to limit outdoor exposure, especially for individuals with preexisting conditions. The latest data suggests that air quality should improve tomorrow as a shift in wind direction pushes smoke away from our region.

P.S. We've received several queries about why our focus is mainly on Southern Ontario and not Northern Ontario. To address this, we do have a dedicated page for Northern Ontario where you can access the latest air quality statements from Environment Canada: https://t.co/fBI0KJUe2G
Our detailed coverage is reliant on AQI measuring stations, and unfortunately, there aren't many in Northern Ontario. Thus, creating a comprehensive map based on limited data points for the entire Northern region isn't feasible. We are committed to providing accurate information and in this instance, can't confidently extend the same level of detailed coverage to the north. We hope that makes sense.
You can still check out the latest AQI data for select locations in Northern Ontario here: https://t.co/tNOfgsj78D
We are seeing heavy #smoke conditions in the Northeast Region due to a large number of #fires in Ontario and Quebec. Visit https://t.co/teQkBzuIfp for smoke forecasts.
