The RAM 1500—a truck designed, apparently, to deliver maximum blunt force trauma to a pedestrian's head or rib cage—has a 5-Star Federal Safety Rating.
The Southern Pacific Coast Daylight ran between Los Angeles and San Francisco starting in 1937, initially as a steam engine. Beautiful shot through Chatsworth... love the red, orange and black color scheme. Amtrak took over the coastal line in 1971.
I rant about LA's terrible public transport in this (mildly sarcastic) column for LA Times.
Navigating the city without a car involved interesting experiences -- some amusing, some unsettling.

E bike ruined my life. Just wanted to ride a bike to work, maybe a couple times a week, and now see #carculture everywhere and submit to council on infrastructure projects.
The more I read about public space the angrier I get that I have to store my bike in my small apartment when people get to store their huge ass vehicles for FREE on a public street
Sometimes I think I'm going crazy but I can't think of anything this trend in truck design is supposed to communicate except "I can run you over if you bother me"

Walking around my old college campus, it’s so apparent that much of the longing that adults feel for their college days is because it was the only time in their lives when they lived in close knit, walkable communities, saw friends everyday, rarely got into cars
I’m thinking of the people in LA who just spent a large portion of their incomes on monthly passes to ride buses and trains which felt like a relatively safe decision this morning yet will be a new source of stress and uncertainty tomorrow
