Assassinations in South Africa are out of control.

The person ordering Babita Deokaran’s assassination has still not been held to account, nor the person who ordered Marumo Phenya’s assassination- this is despite knowing who the trigger men are, and evidence pointing to those who were behind the killings.

Then there is the case of the assassination of City of Cape Town employee Wendy Kloppers linked to the construction mafia, and the assassination of Rand Water executive Teboho Joala.

The assassination of Hawks member Lt Colonel Frans Mathipa sent shock waves through the law enforcement community. The assassinations of Cloete Murray and his son Thomas exposed the seedy world of liquidations in South Africa.

Now we have the assassination of City of Joburg forensic investigator Zenzele Benedict Sithole and the attempted assassination of SARS Advocate Coreth Naude.

These high profile hits and attempted hits on whistleblowers, investigators and city employees; and the numerous hits on politicians, taxi bosses, family members for insurance, and underworld crime bosses; shows the extent of the murder for hire problem which is exacerbated by the fact that those ordering the hits are not been held to account.

It seems that it is now easier to settle disputes or derail investigations simply by putting a price on someone’s head.
