#sapsEC [HELP POLICE FIND MISSING K9 FLOPPY, THREE SUSPECTS AT LARGE AFTER SHOOTING]
The #SAPS is appealing to the public for assistance in locating a police patrol dog, B8088 Floppy, following an armed robbery and subsequent police operation in NU16 Mdantsane earlier today. Three armed suspects remain at large after fleeing into dense bush, and are considered extremely dangerous.
It is alleged that three armed males entered Nzuzo Primary School this morning and, at gunpoint, robbed the school of 20 laptops and 15 cellphones. The suspects also took the headmaster’s black Peugeot vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The Mdantsane Flying Squad responded swiftly and recovered the headmaster’s vehicle approximately 1km from the school. Suspects were seen running into bushes next to a nearby dam. The K9 Unit was summoned, and Sergeant Don, together with his patrol dog B8088 Floppy, cornered the suspects in dense bush.
When the suspects ran further into thick vegetation, the handler released the dog to apprehend them. Shortly thereafter, the handler heard a suspect shouting from inside the bush, followed by the sound of gunshots.
Additional SAPS members arrived to assist. However, upon entering the bush, the dog could not be located, and the three suspects had fled. The suspects remain at large.
Air and ground searches were conducted by SAPS members supported by members of the public who voluntarily prived extra support in terms of drones. Despite extensive efforts, the search was called off at 17:30 due to poor visibility. It will resume tomorrow at first light.
“We are deeply concerned for the safety of our K9, Floppy, who was bravely performing his duty. We urge anyone who may have seen Floppy, or who has any information on the whereabouts of the three suspects now at large, to come forward immediately,” said Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata.
The dog is described as a patrol breed, wearing a SAPS-issued harness at the time of disappearance.
Anyone with information is requested to contact #CrimeStop 08600 10111 or the nearest police station or anonymously via the #MySAPSApp. The SAPS also appeals to the community not to approach the suspects, who are considered armed and dangerous.
An investigation into the armed robbery and the subsequent disappearance of the dog and escape of the suspects is ongoing. Further updates will be provided as the search resumes. #PawEnforcement ST

MEDIA RELEASE

Johannesburg, 13 February 2026
ARREST OF SUSPECT WANTED FOR THE ASSASSINATION OF MARUMO PHENYA
Johannah Phenya, widow of the assassinated whistleblower, Marumo Eric Phenya, has confirmed that the Gauteng Provincial Office of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has advised her of the arrest of one of the alleged hitmen linked to her husband’s murder.
Minenhle Sibusiso Mtembu, who is under investigation by the Gauteng DPCI Serious Anti-Corruption Unit and for whom a warrant of arrest was issued, was arrested earlier this week by KwaZulu Natal SAPS in Northern KwaZulu Natal. He has been transported to Gauteng and will appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court early next week.
Ms Phenya says that she was grateful to the DPCI and SAPS for this major development.
“My husband was assassinated in October 2022. I was afraid that this case would go cold. I appointed IRS Forensic Investigations on an investigation watching brief who liaised with the DPCI, SAPS, the media, government officials and members of parliament. Through the concerted efforts of all concerned, an arrest has finally been made. There is still a lot to be done to hold those that ordered the hit on my husband and I believe that this arrest brings me and my family one step closer to getting justice for Marumo. I extend my sincere thanks to all those from SAPS that were involved in the arrest of this suspect”, said Ms Phenya.
