Three things I'm looking for in next Wednesday's Budget that aren't (or weren't) getting big coverage elsewhere…
1. Standing charges. OK, after this week's announcement they ARE getting coverage. I'm hopeful we'll hear confirmation that gas standing charges are to be ended at some point in the next year.
2. A reversal of the student loan Plan 2 repayment threshold freeze. Former Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced it'd be frozen for 3 years from April 2027. That means everyone repaying on Plan 2 (by far the biggest plan) will see their repayments increase each year. And even if it's later unfrozen, unless the freeze is caught up, it means higher total repayments for many low and middle earners.
For me, this is morally reprehensible. Increasing the cost of student finance for millions who have signed contracts with the government at age 18 is, morally, a one-sided unilateral breach of contract, (even if it isn't legally) thus a breach of natural justice. It's fundamentally unfair and shouldn't happen.
3. The state pension. From next April, the full new state pension will be roughly £13,040/yr – for the first time above the frozen £12,570 tax-free personal allowance. We now know someone who ONLY gets the full new state pension won't pay tax. But it's very important we understand the mechanism.
For example, if someone has just £10 a year of other earnings, will they still have to pay tax? If so, that £10 of earnings will effectively cost them about £100 – the tax they'd pay without the exemption.
Since its foundation in 1824 the bravery of Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers has saved more than 146,700 lives at sea.
Hundreds of those volunteers have died attempting to save others. They are the best of us.
Any person or organisation questioning their actions or loyalty to this country should be corrected and ostracised.
Anyone can drown, but no one should.

So Nigel Farage has declared Reform would declare a national emergency on day one so that they can overrule the judiciary and force legislation through.
This seems to be remarkably like the enabling act that Hitler and the Nazis used to grab power. https://t.co/tF0eQwxCa4
Don’t steal from farmers, they’re armed!😂
Jokes aside, whoever stole the sheep please return them. Farmers face enough hardship without these abhorrent crimes.
TELL US: How far along are you in your pre-Christmas prep? Have you already bought gifts, wrapping, trees, saved up, budgetted & more. Or are you 'what are you on about, it's September!"

As council tax arrears spiral out of control - anyone remember this.
Dominic Cummings £50,000 of unpaid council tax 'written off'.
People have been jailed for far, far less.
We are not all in this together.
