तारीख और साल याद नहीं।
पर विश्वनाथ प्रताप सिंह सर का ऑफिस के लैंडलाइन पर फोन आया, "..मेरे निवास आइए.. कुछ जरूरी बात करनी है, #रामलला को लेकर!"
तब रामलला टेंट में थे।

निवास पर पहुंचा तो चंद्रशेखर सर भी थे। दो पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री। साथ में मुसाहिब, चमचों का गैंग कहीं नहीं। शायद एक सेवक था। चाय साय पिलाने को। दोनों पूरी तरह से तन्हा।

वीपी और चंद्रशेखर दोनों हमारे इलाहाबाद विश्विद्यालय के छात्र रहे। वरिष्ठ रहे हैं तो विश्विद्यालय परंपरा से सर! ही बोलता था।

निजी संबंधों के बूते मुझ जैसे दो-चार पत्रकार मित्र पहुंचे थे। संभवतः सभी इलाहाबाद के। रिश्ता वही विश्वविद्यालय का।

वीपी सर कुछेक कागजों का बंडल लिए बैठे थे। बताने लगे, "...वहां तो मंदिर था ही नहीं, मेरे पास पक्के सबूत हैं।"

इतना बोले नहीं कि हम पत्रकार एक-दूसरे का मुंह देखने लगे।

मुझसे रहा नहीं गया। बोल पड़ा, "....वीपी सर! बुरा मत मानिएगा.. आपके पास जरूर पक्के सबूत होंगे, लेकिन देश को आप पर पक्का भरोसा नहीं रहा, व्यर्थ प्रयास ना करें....कोई अखबार प्रकाशित नहीं करेगा।"

चंद्रशेखर सर! चुप रहे। एक शब्द भी नहीं बोला। उन्हें संभवतः अपना और देश में अपनी धूमिल हो चुकी प्रतिष्ठा का आभास हो चुका था। वीपी को अभी भी बाबरी के जरिए उम्मीद बाकी थी।

हम सबने चाय खत्म की। नमस्कार वगैरहा की रस्म का पालन हुआ। और सभी अपने-अपने ठिकाने निकल लिए। आपस में एक वादा कर, यार! यह खबर कोई सम्मिट नहीं करेगा।

आज वीपी सर का स्मृति दिवस है। मंडल मसीहा का स्मृति दिवस। भारत को अंधकार पथ पर घुसेड़ देने वाले खलनायक का स्मृति दिवस। वीपी सर ने शायद सोचा था, अंबेडकर के कद को लांघ कर महानायक बन जाएंगे। लेकिन स्वयं अंधकूप में समा गए। कहीं भी पिछड़े समाज ने वीपी को याद नहीं किया। फूल-मालाएं नहीं चढ़ाई।

इनके साथ "परिवर्तन की राजनीति" का सपना लिए संघर्ष में उतरी युवाओं की एक पूरी पीढ़ी भी हताश हो गई। बिलो गई। संभावना खत्म कर दी मंडल ने। भोगने को पीछे रह गया भारत का हिन्दू समाज।

इलाहाबाद यूनिवर्सिटी छात्रसंघ के 1979 में अध्यक्ष रहे हमारे अनुग्रह भाई (अनुग्रह नारायण सिंह) ने एक बार बातचीत में कहा, "...वीपी ने हमें कहीं का नहीं छोड़ा...अपने लोगों को जवाब देने, नजर मिलाने लायक नहीं रहे हम।" अनुग्रह भाई से यह बातचीत शायद दिल्ली के यूपी भवन में हुई थी।

आज कुछ #क्षत्रिय_मित्र वीपी को याद कर रहे हैं। पिछड़े तो खामोश हैं। क्षत्रिय भी इसलिए, क्योंकि वर्ण धर्म की बाध्यता है।

ये वही अनुग्रह भाई हैं, क्षत्रिय हैं। चुनाव के वक्त इन्हीं अनुग्रह भाई की मोटर सायकिल पर पीछे बैठ वीपी इलाहाबाद की सड़कों पर चुनाव प्रचार करते। क्रांति के उत्साह से लबरेज हम मूर्ख छात्र नारे लगाते, "राजा नहीं फकीर है, भारत की तकदीर है।" डुबो गया भारत की तकदीर को जातीय संघर्ष में।

संभवतः यह मेरी आखिरी मुलाकात थी। और इस आखिरी मुलाकात में वीपी सर "बाबरी" के लिए गुंजाइश खोज रहे थे।

ना! ना! एक मुलाकात और हुई। बतौर संपादक। जिस दिन वीपी सर के निधन की खबर आई। एक अखबार का संपादक था। स्पेशल पेज की प्लानिंग हुई। तभी मुंबई में बम विस्फोटों को खबर आने लगी। कुछ ही मिनटों में वीपी सर स्पेशल पेज से एक कॉलम की खबर में सिमट गए।

एक और #बाबरी_भक्त का महाप्रयाण हो गया। खामोशी से। चुपचाप।

The burqa was designed for desert conditions — to protect from sandstorms and scorching sun. In modern societies, there's zero practical reason for it. Europeans ditched cloaks, cravats and bowler hats long ago. In Kerala people don't roam shirtless, and in Bihar those ancient Amrapali blouses aren't standard wear anymore.

Muslims need to move with the times instead of clinging to regressive dress codes that belong in the 7th century desert. Integration means adapting to the society you live in. The Koran doesn't mandate the burqa; it's your local mosque which does that to keep you subjugated.
