Brandon Sanderson explains why he gives the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy an A rating:

"Here's why I like Pirates 2 and 3. They did bungle one main thing: Jack Sparrow doesn't work nearly as well as he does in the first one. And that's a big thing.

The world building is so much fun. I'm an epic fantasy guy. All of the stuff with Calypso, and the ocean, and the Pirate Council, and Jack being sent to hell and trying to figure out what's going on, and Davey Jones and the CG, and the world building of Davey Jones' whole crew. Wonderful. ...

I will acknowledge movie 2 and 3 are flawed movies and the first one's a perfect movie. It's another one of these things where it's a great opener and didn't quite know what to do. One's an all timer.

But I have to put the whole trilogy, you're going to hate me on this, in A. I would absolutely go watch a Pirates film over a Bourne film any day. Give me my epic fantasy, guys."

i’ll always love how creative they were with the moonlight gimmick in pirates of the caribbean- it made for some super fun action and then pair it with that score??? ughhh ‘the curse of the black pearl’ is such a perfect adventure movie
