Buying something and selling it in the market is not smuggling. It is not theft. It is one of the most honest ways of earning a livelihood and putting bread on the table.

Yet Muslim men beaten to death by Islamophobic mobs across India are called “smugglers” and “thieves” even during their final, desperate struggle to remain alive. They are falsely labelled, surrounded and brutally beaten to death in public. Then come the news reports: “Smuggler killed by mob.” “Man killed over cattle theft.” “Man killed on suspicion of theft.”

It is not merely a suspicion. It is not a mistake. It is a deliberate and widely “believed”, and “accepted”, plot that makes the killing of Muslims possible in the current India. The victim is first turned into a criminal, and his killing is then made to appear less horrifying, even justified.

A common reader scrolling through such reports may simply think, “Ah, a criminal was killed.”

Most of these stories faithfully reproduce what the police said, what unnamed sources said, what the assailants claimed, or what groups associated with the killers alleged. Very few carry the accounts of the victim’s family, local residents or eyewitnesses.

It is not a difficult task for a media organisation to speak to them. If reporters did, they might find proof of purchase, details of the victim’s work and evidence that he was simply trying to earn a living. They might learn that the man described as a “smuggler” or “thief” had bought the cattle and was taking them to the market to support his family.

But who cares?

If these accounts were reported, the headline would change: A Muslim man was attacked and killed after being falsely labelled a smuggler or thief.

Very few reports say that.

This kind of journalism does not merely fail the dead. It helps create the conditions in which Muslims are vilified before they are killed and criminalised even after their death. It turns the language of their killers into the first draft of history.

These are not neutral words. They are the language that enables hate crimes, shields killers and erases the lives of those murdered.

“Fierce” better describes @CMarrewa’s story: when she told me, with stomach-churning detail and honesty, how MF raped her. He was sentenced to 7 years in jail. But the sentence was overturned on the basis that “no” doesn’t always mean no in India. MF was out in ~18 months.
