WHY UGANDA CALLED ITS CRUDE OIL “PEARL SWEET”

In simple terms, sweet crude oil means oil with low sulfur content (usually below 0.5%).

The name comes from the old days when oil prospectors would actually taste crude oil. Low-sulfur oil tasted mild, while oil with lots of sulfur tasted and smelled terrible. So they called the first one “sweet” and the other “sour.”

Sweet crude is preferred because it is easier and cheaper to refine into petrol and diesel.

WTI and Brent are examples of sweet crude, which is one reason they are important oil-price benchmarks.

So, “sweet crude” is actually a good thing! 🛢️
