Half a century later, MEA’s monopoly over Lebanon’s aviation market has come to an end, after its long-standing exclusivity expired.

First officially granted in 1969 and extended several times since, the exclusivity deal given to MEA (which is 99% owned by Lebanon’s central bank) prevented other airlines from registering as Lebanon-based commercial carriers.

Government sources told L’Orient-Le Jour that there has, so far, been no decision to renew or extend the arrangement. According to some observers, this may reflect a lack of political will.

Its expiry could pave the way for greater competition in the market, potentially helping reduce travel costs that have long weighed on Lebanese travelers. MEA has often come under criticism for fares widely perceived as exorbitant.
