My piece for @techpolicypress - resharing for hope and as a reminder that major reforms are yet to be considered & made. Status quo in CHT remains. Our political elites need to ensure that we never again reach this point of frustration, pain, and distrust.

@pau_wee_ This is such a wonderful tool! As a comms person, I'd love to be able to use it for my organization (i.e. sending birthday greetings, celebrating milestones) but the website currently doesn't allow one to send the bouquet via email
๐บ๐ณ Honoured to participate in the signing ceremony of the @UN Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi
On the sidelines, we supported two EU-hosted events on turning the Convention into action and promoting inclusive, multistakeholder cooperation for its effective implementation.
BANGLADESH: "The interim governmentโs proposed โright,โ then, is not a significant positive achievement within an otherwise faulty reform." @AnjumSamaya@advox

#Bangladesh interim governmentโs โrightโ to uninterrupted internet access is a sham
"An unaccountable security state is allowed to remain in place and to hold vast powers over citizens, while minor changes obscure this essential fact." @AnjumSamaya https://t.co/WZJmlfJviv
๐ง๐ฉ int'm govt is about to enact the Cyber Security Ordinance. @AnjumSamaya & I analyse a part for @techpolicypress: the "right to internet access" is a sham. Not a real right, will not prevent internet shutdowns. Ord'ce continues digital authoritarianism.

Thanks for at least acknowledging plans to update the web management system, which was previously purchased from Sandvine - a controversial firm known for aiding surveillance.

โDespite the crackdown, people grew less cautious with what they were willing to say on social media โ foreshadowing the impending fall of Sheikh Hasina, which, only a few weeks ago, would have seemed almost unfathomable.โ @AnjumSamaya
Echoing @tasneem : โIf reforms are not done, and democratic government and human rights are not established or they are not the top priority of the interim and the coming government, we might see abductions, extrajudicial killings, again.โ https://t.co/iZbvNqnbiJ

"Blindfolded, handcuffed and bundled out of his secret prison for the first time in eight years, Bangladeshi barrister Ahmad Bin Quasem held his breath and listened for the sound of a cocked pistol. Instead he was tossed from a car and into a muddy ditch on Dhaka's outskirts -- alive, at liberty and with no knowledge of the national upheaval that had prompted his abrupt release".

This post by @andcsontos is one I would have liked to have written myself. It provides six good reasons why #Bangladeshโs interim government should abandon its attempt to prosecute the former prime minister sheikh hasina and other key figures (allegedly responsible for the hundreds of killings by the countryโs law enforcement authorities) in the countryโs own international crimes tribunal (ICT) and should seek a proper investigation by the international criminal court (iCC) in The Hague. Prior/parallel to this the government should support a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate events thoroughly.
And language matters. At this point people should talk about investigations not prosecutions. Collect the evidence first!
W/ Hasan CJ out & more SH-era judges perhaps about to go, plugging resources @ochiengwally shared re how Kenya (whose judiciary is now one of the best in the world) handled sitting judges who couldn't be trusted to protect rights:

@muktadirnewage Yes, likely true, but smaller in scale. People have surrounded the police on all sides from the Chowhatta intersection. Sound grenades and tear gas deployed to disperse people for at least an hour, but with fail. This is footage from now (sound on).
I've been working closely with my team at GNI on multiple online safety laws across the Asia-Pacific & Europe. This piece derives from our key takeaways consulting with civil society, companies, and governments of the challenges and harms associated with online safety practices.
Canada may be the latest country to adopt an online safety law. Building on learnings from GNI engagements on online safety practices around the world, GNI's Fellow @AnjumSamaya analyzes the human rights implications of certain provisions in the draft law. https://t.co/mImGDhKeDa

Orwellian developments in the EU: "A provision for biometric fingerprinting, from the age of six, has also been included.. Significantly, the proposed text would allow for the use of "coercion" against children who refuse to have their data taken." https://t.co/b9nTYVT0lQ

To the attached โletterโ which according to sources has been in circulation by ruling party of Bangladesh โ Awami League, it has been alleged that @albd1971 are sending out this letter to bureaucrats, senior law enforcement officials and key civil service members to demonstrate that the government has come to a settlement with the EU election expert team. Once the election is over, the EU will send out this statement and that will be the end of the matter. There wonโt be any sanctions or actions of any kind.
So everyone should go out to the voting centres to cast their votes freely.
I am requesting You/Your respective organization to kindly clear the air on the existence of this draft statement.ย Please confirm whether this is genuine or false.
Thank you.
@tbsnewsbd headline from today: "European Council president greets PM Hasina on her re-election"
I'm obliged to reshare this post by @ZulkarnainSaer & encourage you to compare the two statements attached (official v. leaked). How convenient for the #EU to quietly greet the PM now
