It is deeply distressing that Pakistan, which is the chief mediator of peace between war torn Iran and America, is showing such little tolerance for dissent at home. Detaining Imran Khan’s sisters for standing up for their brother’s freedom is deeply troubling. I hope the saner voices in the establishment will speak out against such arbitrary use of power and that the sisters will be released soon.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met Mr. Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026) Session.

Recalling Gates Foundation Team’s recent visit to Pakistan earlier this month, the Prime Minister appreciated the Foundation’s engagement with Pakistan in support of polio eradication, maternal and child health, nutrition, immunization, digitization, and financial inclusion. 

The Prime Minister highlighted Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to ensure complete eradication of polio from the country. He thanked the Gates Foundation for its longstanding assistance in the important endeavor and expresses his personal commitment to polio eradication.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts under Prime Minister’s leadership, Mr. Gates stressed that polio eradication was vital to protect future generations from this crippling disease. He appreciated the Prime Minister’s personal guidance to the Provincial Governments for the polio vaccine program across the country.

The Prime Minister complimented the Gates Foundation for being a trusted partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development and expressed interest in broadening collaboration in areas including public health, agriculture, digital innovation and AI. 

The Prime Minister also apprised Mr. Gates of the Agri Reforms that the Government was undertaking, with particular emphasis on innovation, biotechnology, climate resilience, research, and capacity-building for farmers. The two sides agreed to explore opportunities for collaboration in the development of improved seeds, livestock genetics and emerging agricultural technologies.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continued and constructive engagement with a view to further strengthening and expanding partnerships that support sustainable development, technological advancement and improved social sectors outcomes for the people of Pakistan. While recalling his earlier visits, the Prime Minister extended an invitation to Mr. Gates to undertake a visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience.

1. Somaliland is a tiny ‘country’ recognised at the moment only by Israel. Its President is in the US & is likely to address a rally near the UNGA venue, making a pitch to the world for recognition. Somaliland also has a deal with UAE on the strategically important Berbera Port. #CutTheClutter explains Somaliland’s geography, roots & why it’s key to the Red Sea power struggle.

2. Somaliland sits on the Horn of Africa, along nearly 850km of coastline facing the Gulf of Aden. It has an elected president, parliament, currency, passports, security forces, taxation, & regular elections. Its population is roughly 6 million. Somaliland is significantly more peaceful than Somalia, from which it separated in 1960. It has played a role in combating piracy rather than enabling it. Yet international recognition remains elusive.

3. Somaliland’s greatest asset is geography. Specifically, the deep-water port of Berbera. Ships moving between the Indian Ocean & the Red Sea pass nearby before entering Bab el-Mandeb & continuing toward the Suez Canal. This is no tiny port. The Soviets once used it, as did the US. More recently, UAE’s DP World invested heavily in expanding Berbera.

4. One purpose the port can serve is to provide sea access to Ethiopia. A large landlocked large country, Ethiopia depends on access through Djibouti. Leveraging its port, Djibouti, which is a much smaller country with a small population, today has a per capita income 4 times Ethiopia & Somaliland’s. This is exactly what Somaliland wants to achieve through Berbera.

5. What is the Somaliland-Somalia story? It goes back to the 20th century history of colonial Africa. The British occupied the region that became British Somaliland. The Italians grabbed the territory to the south, which became Italian Somalia. As decolonisation brought independence, both merged in the spirit of post-colonial unity. That, however, didn’t last & Somaliland decided to return to its pre-1960 status.

6. The complication is most of the Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia, don’t want Somalia to break up. It doesn’t want another country to come up there which is friendly with Israel or UAE. For Israel, a friendly presence near the southern approaches to the Red Sea has strategic significance. And, for the UAE, economic influence through Berbera likely matters more than formal recognition.

Pleased to meet H.E. Dr Denis Bećirović, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the sidelines of UNGA81 in New York.

As we celebrate Saudi National Day, I pray that Pakistan-Saudi Arabia brotherhood continues to grow from strength to strength.
