रेडीमेड पुल चढ़ कर नदी जल्दी पार करने वाले तैर कर देर से पहुँचने वालों से क़ाबिल नहीं कहलाते।

आज की भाषा में कहें तो लिफ्ट से ऊपर पहुँचने वाले, सीढ़ियाँ चढ़ने वालों से ज़्यादा मजबूत नहीं होते।

अगर कोई जाति जन्म से ही हर क्षेत्र में श्रेष्ठ होती, तो यह तय करने की ज़रूरत ही नहीं पड़ती कि किसे शिक्षा, ग्रंथ, ज़मीन और संस्थानों तक पहुँच मिले और किसे नहीं।

दौड़ में अगर कुछ लोगों के पैर बाँध दिए जाएँ और कोई आगे निकल जाए, तो वह प्रतिभा नहीं, शुरुआती बढ़त होती है।

प्रतिभा जाति से नहीं आती, अवसर से आती है। वरना आज भारत का प्रधानमंत्री ब्राह्मण न होने पर भी देश चला रहा है, अधिकांश मुख्यमंत्री ब्राह्मण नहीं हैं, देश के शीर्ष उद्योगपति अलग-अलग पृष्ठभूमि से आते हैं, ‘मिसाइल मैन’ ब्राह्मण नहीं थे, संविधान के शिल्पकार भी नहीं थे, तो क्या अब ‘बौद्धिक श्रेष्ठता’ की परिभाषा बदलेगी?

इतिहास भी वही बनता है जिसे लिखने और छपने दिया जाता है। सदियों तक महिलाओं को शिक्षा और संपत्ति से दूर रखा गया, इसलिए कई प्रतिभाशाली लेखिकाओं को जॉर्ज एलियट, करर बेल, जॉर्ज सैंड जैसे पुरुष नामों से लिखना पड़ा। यह क्षमता की कमी नहीं, अवसर की कमी थी।

ठीक यही बात हाशिए पर रहे जाति समुदायों पर भी लागू होती है, जब लिखने, पढ़ने, संस्थानों में जगह पाने की अनुमति ही न हो, तो उनकी बुद्धि इतिहास की किताबों में नहीं, लोककथाओं में रह जाती है।

असल बात सीधी है, उत्कृष्टता मेहनत और मौके से पैदा होती है, उपनाम से नहीं।

इसलिए किसी जाति का झंडा लहराकर बुद्धि का दावा करना वैसा ही है जैसे विरासत की संपत्ति पर खड़े होकर खुद को self-made कहना।

जश्न ब्राह्मण किसी जाति के वर्चस्व का नहीं, बल्कि बराबरी के मौके का होना चाहिए, जहाँ योग्यता का परचम लहराये, किसी की विरासत का नहीं।
