I officiated at the opening of a new hotel, Four Points by Sheraton Kampala, this afternoon.

I welcomed the group to Uganda and assured them they were in the right place at the right time. As a country, we have everything from raw materials, the internal market of 46 million people, the East African market of 700 million, and the market of Africa of 1.7 billion for goods and services.

I urged them to bring more investors, especially in manufacturing and agro-processing.

We shall continue to support the private sector because it strengthens the economy, which is what Uzalendo (Nationalism/Patriotism) actually means. A strong economy allows the country to be independent. I wish them good luck.

This afternoon, in Entebbe, I used the opportunity to tell the broadcasters under their umbrella body, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) to always be patriotic and avoid promoting politics of identity.

They raised a concern of lost revenues due to a directive I issued on channeling all government advertising business to UBC and New Vision. This directive was never intended to harm the private sector but to help revitalize UBC.

We have therefore agreed that we shall give govt media entities some preferential treatment while still giving the private companies an opportunity to remain in business.
