Dr MS Valiathan a doyen of the medical fraternity is sadly no more. A cardio- thoracic surgeon of international acclaim, Dr Valiathan was as gentle as a dove, wonderfully persuasi but solid as a rock when it came to taking a stand. I witnessed how, as the head of the selection committee for DG ICMR he refused to bow down to enormous political pressure, despite phone calls from the highest and the mightiest, and remained unshaken by overtures,tears or tantrums!
When I moved to Ayush this distinguished man called on me and I could not imagine why! His love for Ayurveda had persuaded him to promote research in the basic concepts and procedures of Ayurveda!  What an unlikely combination! How could a cardio- thoracic surgeon become an exponent of Ayurveda I thought!
I cannot even attempt to list Dr Valiathan's resounding credentials but every thinking Indian should glance at Wikipedia below. India has lost a scientist of unparalleled standing but also a man of the highest integrity - so rare to find! He leaves behind scores of admirers- I being just one !
