NYPD detectives have arrested William Ferrer for the murder of 12-year-old Jacob Freytes and the shooting of two others in the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the Bronx.
Jacob was an innocent bystander on his bike when he was taken from his family yesterday in an act of senseless gun violence.
Ferrer, a 45-year-old male from the Bronx, was apprehended outside of his home this morning. He is being charged with Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter in the First Degree, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.
No arrest can ever ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, but the NYPD will continue to do everything in our power to seek justice for Jacob.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded to criticism that he's fueling antisemitism.
"We have to root out antisemitism from across the five boroughs," Mamdani told CBS News' @AliBaumanTV.
The 21-year-old man convicted in 2025 of trying to join ISIS and accused of ramming his rented vehicle into the Berlin LGBTQ+ Pride parade was killed by police on Sunday, a senior police official in Germany told CBS News.
Germany's interior minister identified the suspect as 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, a German citizen with Lebanese roots. Police described him as being part of Berlin's "Islamist scene" and someone who was known to authorities. CBS News' @annaschecter has what we know about the suspect.
WOW: Police visited Berlin Pride attacker Abdul Ballout on July 3rd- just 3 1/2 weeks ago- but left when they only found a toy gun, according to information provided to @CBSNews by prosecutors. JThe search was prompted by an initial suspicion of a violation of the Weapons Act.
Abdul Ballout, 21, tried to join ISIS and was arrested in Lebanon according to prosecutors in Berlin. Police went to his home earlier this year but only found a toy gun. He rented a vehicle and rammed it into a Pride Parade in Berlin. Police tell me he charged them with a knife and they shot him.
NEWS: A senior police official in Berlin tells me the suspect in the Berlin attack charged towards police with a knife and police opened fire, shooting the suspect.
TIMELINE: Berlin suspected attacker Abdul B's history with law enforcement and courts:
2019: Police have known about Abdul B for at least 7 years. In 2019 was found guilty of assaulting a victim in the schoolyard of a Berlin high school.
2022: Abdul B was convicted by The Tiergarten Local Court—Youth Lay Judges’ Court—for assault and extortion with the intent to rob, and issued a juvenile court order against him.
2024: Prosecutors say he posted prohibited ISIS propaganda on his Instagram account on June 16 and 24, 2024
2025: Prosecutors say Abdul B demonstrated a desire to join ISIS in 2025 On May 12, 2026, Abdul B., received a juvenile sentence of one year and ten months for one count of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and two counts of violating an enforceable prohibition under the Associations Act.
2026: On May 12, 2026, the Tiergarten Local Court—Youth Lay Judges’ Court—sentenced Abdul B., in proceedings brought by the Office of the Berlin Public Prosecutor General, to a juvenile sentence of one year and ten months for one count of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and two counts of violating an enforceable prohibition under the Associations Act.
2026: separate investigation: July 3, 2026, at his residence in Berlin-Schöneberg. The search was prompted by an initial suspicion of a violation of the Weapons Act. However, only a toy gun was found during the search, so the case was subsequently dismissed.
NEWS: Abdul B.'s history according to Alan Bauer, Berlin Public Prosecutor: n the second half of 2025, Abdul B. is said to have developed a desire to join ISIS’s armed struggle. After an unsuccessful attempt in May 2025 to travel to Mauritania via Turkey, he is alleged to have departed from Berlin-Brandenburg Airport on May 20, 2025, traveling via Turkey to Lebanon with the intention of proceeding from there to Syria to join ISIS. In Lebanon, he is alleged to have made contact with several individuals who may have been members of ISIS. At least, that is what Abdul B. presumably believed. On July 24, 2025, he was arrested in Lebanon and held there in pretrial detention. A military court sentenced him to three months in prison for, among other things, incitement to religious and sectarian conflict. After his release from prison, Abdul B. returned to Germany on November 17, 2025, and was arrested at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the Tiergarten Local Court on behalf of the Office of the Berlin Public Prosecutor General at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport and remained in pretrial detention until the verdict. In addition, the court found, in accordance with the indictment, that Abdul B. had already posted prohibited ISIS propaganda on his Instagram account on June 16 and 24, 2024.
In determining the sentence, the court took into account, among other things, that Abdul B. had spent nearly six months in pretrial detention in Germany during these proceedings and had spent three months in custody in Lebanon. In addition, the court took into account that Abdul B. had largely admitted to the charges during the trial and had distanced himself from ISIS, and that no concrete threat to protected legal interests had occurred.
This conviction is not final, as the Office of the Berlin Public Prosecutor General has filed an appeal. The Office of the Berlin Public Prosecutor General had requested a harsher juvenile sentence—one that could no longer be suspended—as well as the upholding of the arrest warrant.
Finally, in another case brought against Abdul B. by the Office of the Berlin Public Prosecutor General, a search was conducted on July 3, 2026, at his residence in Berlin-Schöneberg. The search was prompted by an initial suspicion of a violation of the Weapons Act. However, only a toy gun was found during the search, so the case was subsequently dismissed.
NEWS: Berlin police announcement lays out how much they know about Abdul B, who police believe rented the vehicle used in the Berlin Pride Parade attack. Police are asking for the public’s help to find him:
