2002: Ilhan Omar marries husband one in a mosque. They have two kids in that marriage. They "split" in 2008.

2009: she legally marries husband two in a Christian church. No mosque would do it because apparently the muslim community knew him as her brother.
While married to him, she has her third child with husband one and files joint tax returns with husband one in 2014 and 2015.

A former friend says she told the community she needed papers so her brother could go to school.

2017: she divorces the husband/brother and remarries husband one a month later.

Imagine two mothers.

I see this contrast fairly often in marriage coaching, and it shows what's wrong with superficial ideas about what being “traditional” means.

The first is a doctor who works four days a week. Her schedule is busy, so she and her husband are very organised. She drops their kids off at school in the morning before work and picks them up afterwards. She's attentive to the children when home, including helping with their homework from school. All their needs are met. She cooks all the family meals, protects time with her husband, does all her household duties well and sacrifices professional opportunities whenever they conflict with her family.

The second does no paid work at all. But she sleeps late for no reason, scrolls for hours on her phone each day looking at dresses and home decor, lets her routine household responsibilities slide, resents the daily demands of motherhood, expects her husband to entertain her, has little energy for him when he returns home from work, spends the family's money carelessly and excuses all this by saying how difficult it is to be home with children.

“Which wife has a career?” is one of the least important questions possible here.

Instead, we have to consider which wife is actually ordering her life toward the good of her husband, children and household.

And it's the wife with a career outside the home.

We also shouldn't make rash judgements about the failing stay-at-home wife. Why is she failing? Weakness is more likely than deliberate malice. Many things often need to be taken into context in a situation like this: depression, pregnancy, postpartum exhaustion, isolation, body image problems, self esteem, a lack of sleep, ADHD, burnout, etc.

But the point is clear.

Being a stay-at-home wife isn't itself a moral success, and being a wife with a career outside the home isn't itself a moral failure.
