UPDATE - The Water intake plant that supplies water to Greene County and some areas of surrounding counties is completely unsalvageable. The Greene Water Commission (GWC) turned off the pumps at 2 PM today and the county will run out of water by tomorrow morning and be out for at least a week.
Emergency pumps are being brought in, but due to complications at a downstream system, it could take days for them to get started , meaning the county will be without water for days, possibly weeks.
Here is the full statement from the Water Department:
This has been a historical, unprecedented event.
Last night, our intake structure was enveloped by the Nolichuckey River. As most know, the Greeneville Water Commission supplies water to Greeneville and the majority of Greene County through five utility districts. Our intake structure is how we pump water from the river to the treatment plant. It was totally submerged.
After the water receded today, we discovered that there is not much if anything salvageable at our pumping station. We have a supply of water at our plant, but it was quickly being used due to circumstances out of our control. We have storage tanks in our system, as do the utility districts.
At 2 pm today, we turned the pumps off at our treatment plant that feeds the distribution system. The water in the storage tanks is what is left. This should be a 24 hour supply under normal conditions. We are having emergency pumps delivered tomorrow, but these things take time. We have to configure piping to conform with our existing infrastructure to get water to our plant, which is a few miles away.
We are working incessantly around the clock to do all we can do as is all of our utilities and first responders. Please be kind and patient. We have families that we are not able to go home to right now either.
With all of the misinformation, I wanted you to hear it from the horse's mouth (or, as some might say, from another part of horse anatomy). We do not know how long we will be without water. It is not an if but a when. We are hoping for a week to when we can start pumping.
Please give us time and please pray for our community and come together instead of criticizing.
We're getting our first look at the devastation in Western NC, what officials are now calling "Buncombe County's own Hurricane Katrina."
County Emergency Management held a press conference this afternoon, calling the damage "biblical." Here's what we learned:
@wxbrad if you are in the effected area of hurricane Helene, or know anyone that is in the effected area, the Mt Mitchell Ham Radio repeater, 145.19 Mhz, -600 Khz is up and running with hams able to make phone calls for anyone in the effected area that might need to make contact
ATTN: We are currently operating helicopter operations out of Western NC. If you are in need of supplies or flight assistance please feel free to contact us either at 919-497-5511 Ext 1 and leave a message or email us at [email protected]#HurricaneHelene
All roads in and out of Asheville, NC are still closed! It sounds like Asheville is still only accessible by air unless you head up from I26, and even then you will encounter closures before the city. This is an absolute mega disaster for western NC on the order of Hurricane Katrina
@ReedTimmerUSA If you have starlink people can use the WiFi calling setting on their phone to call out
Turn WiFi calling on on the phone, and log into the starlink hotspot from the phone, pass it on to others and emergency services people please and thank you 🙏👍

@ChrisJacksonSC@NWSCharlestonSC Welcome to Mtp. Live over by long point. our lights flickered several times and then the news stated tornado warned by the bridge. Pulled up hwy cameras, saw tons of cops pulling up to don holt.not sure what happened. Also, not sure of the timing bc it's been a long night already
Go ahead…and get your mind ready for what’s likely coming.
There are absolutely some very unhinged people out there, who have been waiting for this moment. Some of them are almost certainly going to decide “F*ck this!! They’re going to pay for this!” and engage in an act of violence. They are.
Don’t fear it. Embrace the truth of it. Somewhere, it’s going to happen.
Why would I say “embrace the truth of it”? Simple. You can’t control it. You can’t prevent every loon from taking things into their own hands. You just need to be psychologically prepared, so that if and when news breaks with such an episode, you don’t get knocked off the tracks, and you can more easily manage to stay mentally, emotionally, and psychologically sound.
Your mental and emotional health can manage one hell of a lot….if you’re using good strategies and tools. If you just let it run on default mode, things usually unravel, for all but a few.
Stay on top of YOU, and this journey will be a more pleasant experience.
Twenty years ago, just having exited the Navy about four years prior, I was getting ready to present my training to a panel of high ranking naval officers, who would then decide between the training I was offering, and that of others the Navy had brought in to try and persuade them to hire their company, instead.
I was second to last. It was now my turn. The working title of my training was “Communication that Creates Favorable Physiological Responses for Patients in the Hospital Setting.”
Without question, the other presenters had spent hours & hours in the weeks leading up to the big day. They knew a lot was on the line, and were determined to masterfully weave their words into what would amount to a 15-20 minute sales presentation that would assure the contract.
I didn’t spend so much as 1 minute preparing for my presentation in the weeks leading up to that day. I didn’t use 15-20 minutes for my presentation, either. I used 90 seconds.
Upon walking to within six feet of the three tables that were side by side, and where the panel members were seated, I paused.
After turning slightly, taking a second to look each one of them in the eyes….I finally spoke. I said one word: Fuck.
I then stood there, silently counting to ten; a length of time that no doubt felt like an eternity to everyone in that room…including me.
As I counted, I noted both the physiological changes I was able to observe, and…the ones I knew were occurring, that I could not see.
“In the ten seconds since I spoke that one word, I’ve observed flushing in your faces. Your capillaries have dilated. Your eyelids have ceased blinking. Your respiration rate has increased. Your heart rate has picked up considerably, and your entire endocrine system is going through fluctuations as I speak..” (They were all medical officers…so I knew that they knew what I was saying was irrefutable)
“With one single word….just one…I have altered your physiology in a way that will have lingering effects in the hours that follow. Just. One. Word.”
“That’s my business. That’s what I do. I teach people to quickly begin linking words together into short, simple, and powerful phrases, that alter the mental and emotional states-the thus, the very biochemistry-of their chosen audience. Here, your audience will be the patients you have been tasked with caring for. I simply show you how to care more effectively.”
With that, I simply reached into the inside pocket of my suit jacket, pulled out my business cards, and quietly placed one in front of each of them…only then, saying “thank you for your time” as I walked back to the door I had used to enter the room. You could hear a pin drop.
The next morning my phone rang. “We’d like you to come back in to discuss a few things. We think we’re probably going to go with you.
90 seconds. 90 emotional, impactful and undeniable seconds.
As a party, we have to get better. We do. And….we CAN get better.
