We join the National Conference of State Legislatures in celebrating Legislative Staff Week. Kudos to these fine public servants
As the Council’s legislative staff always says “If the public loves something the Council did, thank the staff. If not, then it was the Councilmembers”
On this date in 1974, DC residents voted in favor of the Home Rule Charter & the creation of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions
The Charter created our current Mayor/Council system of gov’t, yet (to this day!) all our local legislation faces the threat of Congressional override
The Star launches in June with dramatically expanded coverage of Washington politics and policy — and new coverage of D.C. itself. The District isn’t just the place where politics happens. It’s home to the people who pull the levers of power. It’s where they live and work and commute and eat and vote and navigate the unique intersection of politics and real life.
The Star will cover all of it, from Donald Trump’s stamp on the District to the ambitions of its first new mayor in more than a decade. Who’s wielding power in D.C.? What’s driving them? What impact are they having on housing, schools, transportation and the District’s neighborhoods? What’s next for Home Rule? For statehood? And will the Nationals ever be good again?
We’ll do it with the same rigor we bring to our coverage of national politics and policy, and we’ll do it with the best local reporting team in D.C. We’re excited to announce the start of that team today — veteran journalists you know and trust, plus newcomers who will bring fresh eyes to the vibrant and sometimes vexing place we all call home.
Of local note: @dcdmv has finalized rules the city's new Intelligent Speed Assistance Program, which would require drivers convicted of aggravated reckless driving (and some other serious offenses) to install a device that limits them to driving only 5 mph over the speed limit.
@wmata On several recent trips (at 2 different stations), when attempting to enter or exit, I’ve experienced issues at fare gates. I’ve observed the same issue with other riders. Most importantly, station managers were not at the manager’s box to assist. Fare gate glitch?
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In 2024, distracted driving killed 3,208 people nationwide. In DC, 821 tickets were issued for distracted driving (659 wh/using a cellphone). Keep your eyes on the road! Please don't be this person. https://t.co/ITrXFR3Zin.

We mourn the loss of Jesse Jackson, an icon who bridged eras of history—from the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. to his groundbreaking Presidential campaigns to his time as DC’s Shadow Senator. In today’s difficult times, we must strive to live his words: Keep hope alive
#RestInPower to Rev. Jesse Jackson. Today, we honor a giant whose voice, courage, and love for our people shaped generations. Reverend Jesse Jackson was not only a civil rights icon—he was family to the NAACP.
His legacy sits at the heart of our work and at the center of this nation’s fight for justice. We carry his light forward. https://t.co/4BSEsITjD3
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, #OTD in 1929. Developing a philosophy centered around love, equality, freedom & justice, Dr. King earned international admiration as a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. We honor him at the MLK Memorial. #WashingtonDC
Happy birthday, Dad. Your faith in humanity, your insistence on love over hate, and your belief that everyone can serve continue to renew me. In the darkest of times, your legacy is a light. When I feel hopeless, your spirit carries me. You will forever be in my heart.
#PresidentJohnson believed #CivilRights were a moral necessity—and acted. With the leadership of #MartinLutherKing Jr. and the civil rights movement, lasting change became possible.
On Dr. King’s birthday, we reflect on his enduring commitment to justice and equality.
Happy birthday, Daddy. Thank you for being a bold purveyor of true peace. Thank you for living with purpose and for radically lifting the power of love. Thank you for believing that we can defeat injustice without destroying each other. Thank you for your courage and strategic, compassionate action. Thank you for teaching me so much, even now. I remember you today, on your 97th birthday. I remember you always.

Claudette Colvin, who at 15 y/o refused to yield her seat to a white woman in defiance of Jim Crow laws in 1955 Alabama is now with the ancestors. Her legacy of civil rights activism teaches that one is never too young to lead and never unworthy of dignity. Rest in peace & power.
The Trump administration claims there was no need for Congress to authorize the military attack in Venezuela because the military was merely supporting a “law enforcement operation” (i.e., executing arrest warrants against the Maduros). That’s wrong on multiple counts. 1/20
