DiMeo Farms was featured in the media again, this time it was not for “America’s Most Wanted” lol, but for tips on “picking blueberries” in the proper containers, without crushing all the blueberries on the bottom. We often see pick your own blueberry farms all across the United States who hand out coffee cans or other deep containers to pick blueberries at their local u-pick farms, but that is wrong for preserving fruit quality. Because what happens is the blueberries are heated to an internal temperature of about 86 degrees in the hot summer sun. Then the weight of the blueberries in the can crushes all the fruit on the bottom that has not had a chance to cool yet, which then significantly reduces the shelflife of your blueberries once you take them home. This is why blueberry farmers pick in crates (lugs) no deeper than 2 1/2 inches and then take them back to the blueberry packing house to pre-cool them before placing them in the coolers to cool down the blueberries so they don’t get smashed.
Home gardeners from all across the United States often mail us letters and special little thank you cards, telling us about the great memories they have picking blueberries with their grandparents other loved ones. People always tell us about their “retirement dream” to plant their own little patch of blueberry bushes, and others who plant just a few blueberry bush for special life moments. Like this happy customer, who is planting them as they expect the birth of their first child. The investment in blueberry bushes becomes a valuable family heirloom that then gets passed down to the next generation. Our DiMeo family of blueberry farmers, treasure and keep all of your cards and letters. Thank you for making DiMeo Farms a special part of your life memories.

This is the headline in the Wall Street Journal. We have been saying this for quite some time. Scroll back in our posts. American farmers now want to retire, but there are not enough young new generation farmers to replace them. So farmers across the United States are now selling their farm and farmland to developers, hedge funds, foreign countries, data centers, warehouses, foreign investors, big food companies and large private investors who want to control your food, water rights, and much more. The majority of American farmers are now all saying the same thing, they don’t have someone from the next generation to continue the family farm. This is why more and more of your food is now being imported in from countries outside the United States. As a country, we simply can’t allow this to happen. Something has to be done. Let’s come together to find a way to fix this problem and keep your local American farms going, before it’s too late. This is not a political issue, this is a national security issue.

Our grandfather, Anthony “Tony” DiMeo, Sr., was a hardworking American blueberry farmer. He started at the bottom. Had no formal education, beyond the 5th grade. His father pulled him out of school to hoe endless rows of blueberry plants on the family farm. Still, he was excited to wake up every morning. He loved working outdoors in the fresh air, together with his family, slowly building up the blueberry farm, and taking it to the next level. He saved every penny. Probably still had his milk money saved from kindergarten. It was tough to get him to spend money. You couldn’t get him to buy a new truck. He would fight you all the way. Said he didn’t need one. Didn’t care about impressing other people.
When one of his farm truck tires went bad, he refused to buy a new tire. He went to the local junk yard to buy an old tire instead. For years, none of the tires on his old farm truck matched. People would often laugh and tease him. He didn’t care. Said he would rather save the money. Those mismatched truck tires were not a sign of being poor, they were a sign of discipline, self control and investing his money wisely.
Whenever there was a downturn in the market, he had the money saved, and ready to go. He quickly pounced. Kept buying more farmland. Planted more and more acres of blueberry bushes. He left a growing legacy for his family as one of the largest blueberry growers in the United States.
His story, like so many others, are what built this country, and what many have since forgotten. Let's remember to give thanks, and do all that we can to encourage future young generations to proudly follow in their footsteps.
This farmer turned down $15,000,000 million dollars to stop a tech company from turning his farmland into a massive data center. We have also turned down numerous offers. Our DiMeo family, with all different farms combined, grow about 986 acres of blueberries. So far, members of our farming family have preserved about 500 acres of farmland, which means that it is not being sold to developers, hedge funds, foreign countries, data centers, warehouses, large private investors, or big food companies that are quietly buying up family farms all across the United States. We hope other America farmers will join us and not sell out.

We helped this family in Turkey get their little organic blueberry farm operation going. They got $7.00 a pint this past summer, and him and his wife were picking about $5,000 worth of blueberries a day, and they do it all themselves. Now that’s a lot of money in the United States. Can you imagine how life changing this is for them over there? Starting this blueberry farm, literally changed their lives. He hauls them in his car back to their little packing shed, and again the same problem, they can’t pick enough blueberries. Whatever they pick, sells out. And $7.00 a pint, that’s a lot of money and he’s getting it. At first they were using the wrong lugs to harvest. They were using 30 pound harvesting lugs, which are no good because the weight of the blueberries smashes the ones on the bottom, so we got them using these instead and they had a much better pack out this year and made record sales at little roadside stand and farmers market. They are doing so well that the guy literally quit his job to be a full time blueberry farmer, that’s how well they are doing. Well tell people all the time, you don't need a lot of acres to start a successful small operation. You just have to take the first step. So many success stories. More to come.
People from all over the world (mostly new, small family blueberry farm start-ups) reach out to us for our expert advice about growing blueberry bushes and how to grow better blueberries. They constantly email, call and message us. Many of them ask to fly here to personally meet with us, they want to hire us as blueberry expert consultants. It’s practically non-stop, and it has been this way now for many years. They share pictures with us as they start to show signs of success, and there are just so many great, untold success stories out there that no one knows about, because we never have the time to post them. So this year, we are going to make an effort to start sharing more of these great untold success stories with you, because we not only help American small family farms get started, but we also help small family farms all over the world, to get them started and on their way to becoming successful blueberry growers. For example, this husband and wife in Japan. Their dream was to start their own little organic blueberry farm and to sell locally grown blueberries at their local farmers markets. They reached out to us and needed our expert advice on promoting better soil health. Basically they were incorporating all the wrong stuff into their soil and causing themselves all kinds of issues, but we got them all straightened out. They built their own little packing shed with recycled materials, and now they are growing big beautiful organic blueberries, and easily getting over $9.00 a pint. Their only problem now, is that they can’t grow enough blueberries. Whatever they grow and pack, they sell out the same day, so we advised them to do a high-density planting of blueberry bushes to get more pounds of blueberries per square foot and to maximize the use of their land without compromising blueberry yield. This is what it looks like to start your own little blueberry farm business from nothing. It might not be glamorous or fancy, you might not have all the best new equipment and stuff, but you don't need to. You just need to start. Take the first step and then grow from there. Every day is progress and every day you will learn and get better and better. Make the best of what you have and follow your dreams, in this case it's their own family blueberry farm, and we are honored to have helped them reach their dream.

FARMLAND PRESERVATION FUNDING JUST APPROVED AND SIGNED INTO LAW: A pair of bills S-4524 and S-4531 appropriated $86 million dollars, which is now sitting in an account, waiting for you to make your application. Remember, you will still own the land, and yes, it can be sold, left to your heirs or gifted, at any point in the future. But once the land is preserved, it can never be used for anything other than productive farmland to grow food. New Jersey is now willing to pay you generously for doing so, and other states are now stepping up as well. We have been speaking with Chiefs of Staff, urging public officials to consider farmland preservation an emergent priority for year 2026, and to make more funds available, and to substantially increase their preservation offers to more aggressively compete with developers, hedge funds, foreign investors, data centers, warehouses, big companies and private investors who are quietly buying up as much farmland as possible all across the United States. We urge you to do the same thing, so right after the holiday break, starting on January 5, 2026, start working the phones and contact the Chief of Staff for each of your state representatives, and urge them to be more aggressive with their offers and funding for farmland preservation, and to make preserving small family farms one of their top priorities for 2026.
Just acquired a beautiful early piece by Italian American artist Pino Daeni who was known for his impressionistic depictions of elegant women, a great addition to my collection. If you know anyone who is selling artwork, let me know, because we like to invest in all types of art.
RIGHT TO FARM RESTITUTION JUST SIGNED INTO LAW: Legal Protections for New Jersey farmers are now the most powerful in the nation. Bill A-4603/S-3662 allows farmers to be awarded all attorney fees and costs when they successfully defend against any complaints under the NJ Right to Farm Act. This powerful new law will make neighbors, towns, townships, counties and other organizations think twice before messing with small family farms in NJ. Because now, if they lose the case, they have to pay the farms legal bills and other costs. This is a big win for NJ farmers, especially as it pertains to agritourism, agritainment, and much more that is now all protected and permitted under law. If you don’t live in New Jersey, be sure to contact the chief of staff for all relevant legislators and push to get similar legislation passed in your state, because farms are now much more than just simply growing fruits or vegetables. They now also include various types of tourism, entertainment and special events that children, families, couples and tourists enjoy.
This time of year, blueberries are bulk shipped in from countries outside the United States and are packed in Hammonton, NJ packing houses where big companies lease out existing facilities and state-of-the-art blueberry packing equipment with AI technology to pack their fruit for supermarkets all across America. This is actually quite common, not just with blueberries and blueberry farmers, but with other produce that needs to be packed during the winter season. American farmers are now leasing out their existing packing equipment and packing houses to other reputable companies to keep the money flowing in during the winter off-season. So although it might be cold outside, it never really stops. Years ago it did, but these days, packing produce has become an all year-round thing, with high demand for existing packing facilities where all you have to do is flip the switch and your packing high volume.
Today this happy blueberry plants customer is planting a sustainable edible hedge row alongside her house. She is doing a great job. Notice the proper spacing is 2.5’ feet between each blueberry plant and that she put straight peat moss inside each hole. Now she is going to easily cover the holes and then step on the dirt around the blueberry plants to pack them in tight. She can mulch with pine needles, pine bark or any kind of mulch she prefers, but should stay away from dyed mulch. Is mulching required? No it is not. We do not mulch in any of our blueberry fields, and our blueberry bushes are quite happy without it since we only use only straight peat moss. Call us (609) 561-5905 with any questions. We are here to help and want you to be successful growing your own organic heirloom blueberries at home. https://t.co/qgfR9yRIsd
