On this day, July 29, 2024, the United States Marine Corps laid Vietnam veteran and former Commandant Gen. Alfred M. Gray Jr. to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Gray's connection to Vietnam began in 1962, when he commanded the first Marine Corps ground signals-intelligence unit deployed to the country. He returned during the expanding American war and served with the 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, beginning in October 1965.

Over a remarkable 41-year career, Gray rose from enlisted Marine to four-star general. He became the 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1987 and was remembered for remaining closely connected to enlisted Marines, strengthening professional military education and reshaping how the Corps prepared for future wartare.

Gray died on March 20, 2024, at the age of 95. Four months later, Marines gathered at Arlington to honor him with cannon fire, a three-volley salute, the playing of "Taps" and a missing-man formation flown by Marine Harriers.

His burial marked the final farewell to a Vietnam veteran whose service influenced generations of Marines.

Today, we remember Gen. Alfred M. Gray Jr. and honor his lifetime of service to the United States and the Marines he proudly led.

We're remembering Lawrence Nathaniel "Honey" Brooks - America's oldest known living World War I! veteran, who lived to 112. Born September 12, 1909, in Norwood, Louisiana, one of 15 children, he was drafted in 1940 at age 31.

As a private first class in 91st Engineer Battalion, he served in the Pacific Theater - Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines
- building roads, bridges, and airstrips under tough conditions.

Discharged in 1945, he returned home, worked as a forklift operator in New Orleans, and became known for his humor, deep faith, and kindness.

He celebrated birthdays at the National WWII Museum well into his 110s. Lawrence Brooks passed away at home on January 5, 2022.

One thing you will NEVER, EVER forget. Being on a commercial flight, & the crew makes an announcement that it is their HONOR to be a part of escorting a fallen soldier home.

They ask that after landing, everyone remain seated while the military escort team disembarks. Of course, during this time, the plane is SILENT, except for the sound of the coffin being unloaded from the cargo hold.
