@postdiscipline This the part that lost me. It’s such a simplistic misreading of anthropology that one has a hard time seeing the whole report as much more than flawed assumptions and bad faith arguments.
Irony is dead.
Widely circulated report that slams the humanities for a lack of rigor is ... not itself rigorous.
Humanities certainly have lots of issues, but we can do better than this.
The New School has laid off 68 staffers and 19 full-time faculty—more than half of them tenured—as it confronts a $60 million budget deficit driven in part by Trump administration restrictions on international students, who made up 36% of its student body in December 2025.

The Department of Economics at the New School for Social Research has just issued a statement on the New School's decision to layoff dozens of staff and faculty colleagues, including our own colleague and friend, Professor Sanjay Reddy.
And I don't regret those decisions. I have never since experienced the same level of intellectual curiosity, rigor, creativity, and collaboration as I did as a grad student at the New School.
As a grad student, I turned down Berkeley and Duke to be at the New School. Others turned down Chicago, Columbia, etc. It took years for many faculty to consider leaving after being pursued by other universities with better salaries. And that's bc NSSR was wholly unique. No more
The New School for Social Research was a very special place. Many grad students & faculty (myself included) turned down "better" PhDs & jobs bc of a shared mission & unmatched intellectual energy & political commitment. These cuts have likely destroyed that forever.
@djc84156279@dbessner Lang and NSSR will be one unit, but it's unclear what will be left at the graduate level. Anthropology, sociology, and history are no longer undergraduate majors, for example.

i'm very skeptical of ai consciousness, but Ted Chiang continues to be a hack, his arguments in his latest article for the atlantic are all very silly. Also his writing sucks.

“I had a friend at Macmillan. He wanted to quit & also wanted to go to Paris. So he wrote a pitch for a fake novel under a fake name, got the advance, left town before they could find out, never wrote the book, & never heard about it again.”

Maybe will seem like a niche grievance against AI-generated prose — but when I’m writing, I am often writing AGAINST the content, form, and interventions of other authors. A great deal of published nonfiction writing is twee, insubstantial, sentimental, conventional, and mediocre
Well this is embarrassing! The Pro Vice Chancellor for Quality and Integrity at WSU gets caught using AI to write an op-ed in defense of how universities are embracing AI. And the piece is then retracted for inappropriate use of AI. https://t.co/USEAGHJ1sG
