NATO's task is to deter. But if you repeatedly have to manage incidents, then you should ask yourself how deterrence can be restored and focus less on celebrating the successful management of such incidents.
The Northwood Declaration of July 2025 marks the most far-reaching step yet in UK–France nuclear cooperation, committing both states to coordinating nuclear policy, capabilities and operations.

Interesting, photos published earlier today of the French “Rafale” Multirole Fighters that have been deployed to Minsk Mazowiecki Air Base in Poland as part of NATO’s Eastern Sentry, show that the fighters are part of the Escadron de Chasse 2/4 La Fayette Squadron of the French Air and Space Force. This squadron operates the Dassault Rafale B and is one of France’s only nuclear strike squadrons with the Force de dissuasion (Deterrence Force), which is equipped with the Air-Sol Moyenne Portée (ASMP) nuclear-armed air-launched cruise missile. According to France’s nuclear doctrine, the ASMP serves as a “pre-strategic” deterrent, intended to be the ultimate “warning shot” prior to the full-scale employment of strategic nuclear weapons against Russia. While it’s doubtful that any ASMPs have been transferred with the squadron to Poland, this is very clearly a message towards Russia.
Romanian fighter jets were kind enough to escort a Russian shahed drone through its territory for 50 minutes until it made its way back into Ukraine to murder people.
Now we see the madness of NATO refusing to defend every inch of its airspace. We now have regular, likely soon to be daily, incursions into NATO airspace by Russian weapons.
They are not currently seeking to cause damage, but instead to disrupt. Now you have airports shutting down and economic damage. And this will persist.
We could have reacted firmly and decisively, but instead we did nothing. And now we have consequences. There is no scenario where Russia would have been offended by NATO defending its airspace from day one. But NATO decided to stick to this holier than thou, turning the other cheek approach, letting Russian weapons fly into NATO territory and pretending it did not matter.
It mattered then. It matters now. And we live with the negative consequences.
And what is your plan going forward? Now it has escalated past the point of random accidents, or Russia rerouting attacks around air defense. Now it is brazen attacks, and now what?
Now the response is vastly more complicated, and with a lot more downside risk. Shooting down wayward Shaheds was easy. Now the problem is very complicated, and costing a lot of money.
Couldn’t be clearer. One Russian paper lays out Moscow’s position on the war: “The Kremlin believes Russia is slowly but surely achieving its goals in Ukraine. So Moscow doesn't intend to stop or feel any desire for half-hearted solutions & half-baked compromises” #ReadingRussia

Yes, it’s infuriating that the United States has halted delivery of critical Patriot interceptors, and yes, the 30 PAC-3 MSEs stored in Poland would have helped and are badly needed.
But Western missile defense cannot keep pace with Russia’s missile production - across all categories. Trying to win that race puts us on the losing side.
The best course is to enable Ukraine to return the punishment tenfold.
That should also be Europe’s response to Russia’s missile buildup: embrace a conventional countervalue posture and aim thousands of cruise and ballistic missiles at every high-value target west of Kazan.
Sentences that would have had you sectioned if you'd uttered them five years ago: two-thirds of Germans, including 46% of AfD and 41% of Die Linke voters, agree that the defence budget should increase to 5% of GDP
