During World War 1, both sides engaged in constant surveillance of enemy lines, but this was a challenging task. Exposing oneself above the trench parapet for more than a few seconds often resulted in being shot. To overcome this obstacle, the French devised a clever strategy of disguising observation posts as trees, and they shared this technique with the British, who also adopted it. Eventually, even the Germans began employing this method.

Given the constant vigilance of the enemy along the front, the creation of a new tree was not feasible since it would instantly attract attention and gunfire. Therefore, a suitable dead tree, preferably one that had been destroyed by a bomb and located near the trenches, was carefully selected. The chosen tree was thoroughly photographed and examined, with precise measurements taken and detailed sketches created. A hollow replica made of steel was then crafted in a workshop situated far behind the front lines. Under the cover of darkness and the cacophony of artillery fire, the real tree was felled, and the counterfeit tree was stealthily installed in its place, with the noise of the work effectively masked by the ongoing bombardment.

To access the observation post, a soldier would enter through the base and ascend a ladder securely fastened inside the steel tube. Positioned near the top, the soldier would sit on a seat and monitor enemy positions through multiple viewing holes. For additional protection, the soldier utilized a periscope to observe through the openings while remaining shielded behind a solid metal wall.

Remarkably, these disguised observation posts proved to be highly successful.
