On the occasion of Indian Foreign Service Day, I extend my warm greetings to all members of the diplomatic fraternity.
The honour of representing India at international fora, and the profound sense of responsibility that comes with it, remain unparalleled.
For me, it has been an eventful journey where I worked on several landmark initiatives to secure India’s interests, from multilateral trade negotiations, national security issues, regional stability and strategic affairs.
My work at GATT, including my role as Chair of the Committee on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures, and my association with UNDP and UNCTAD in supporting developing countries during the Uruguay Round of negotiations, which led to the establishment of the WTO, were particularly fulfilling experiences. So, too, was the opportunity to serve on GATT and WTO dispute settlement panels.
The tenure as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence came at an important juncture in international affairs. Alongside working on defence planning, coordination among the three Services and international defence cooperation, I had the chance to lead Indian delegations for India-US dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation.
The posting in Colombo took me to the heart of a critical phase in India-Sri Lanka relations, including the diplomatic efforts surrounding the 1987 Accord. Much later, as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, I had the opportunity to represent India as we presided over the UN Security Council in 2011 and 2012 and chair its Counter-Terrorism Committee. This posting also gave me a closer understanding of the diplomatic dimensions of peacekeeping, including India’s contribution to the UN mission in Sudan and the transition to an independent South Sudan in 2011.
These experiences, and several more, were both humbling and enriching. They also deepened my appreciation of the dedication of our diplomats and the commitment of Indian personnel serving in challenging circumstances around the world.
IFS offers unparalleled opportunities to serve the nation and contribute to advancing India’s interests on the global stage.
Warm greetings to the entire Indian Foreign Service fraternity on this special day.

A Voice Falls Silent, An Echo Remains Eternal!
Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar ji, a towering presence in Indian cinema and one of its most compelling, unconventional talents.
From the smouldering intensity of Parinda, Krantiveer, Prahaar and Ab Tak Chhappan to the unforgettable emotional grandeur of Marathi cinema’s Natsamrat, and his delightful comic turn in Welcome, Nana traversed the entire spectrum of human emotion with extraordinary authenticity. His gravelly voice, piercing gaze, explosive dialogue delivery and ability to make even silence speak made him a performer without parallel. A recipient of the Padma Shri and three National Film Awards, he was never merely an actor playing a character; he seemed to inhabit its very soul.
For me, as a Maharashtrian with roots in Ratnagiri, his passing carries a particularly poignant resonance.** Nana embodied the earthy candour, cultural pride and indomitable spirit of Maharashtra. Beyond the arc lights, his compassion found expression in his work for drought-stricken farmers and rural communities through the NAAM Foundation. An artist of formidable intensity, a man of disarming simplicity, and a humanitarian whose concern extended far beyond the screen.
नटसम्राट पडद्यावरून निरोप घेतो, पण रसिकांच्या हृदयातून कधीच नाही.
The curtain may have fallen, but his voice, his characters and his remarkable legacy will continue to reverberate through generations.
भावपूर्ण श्रद्धांजली, नाना! ॐ शांती।
A thousand lights for peace — and Gandhi’s light still travels through generations. 🕊️
Honoured to deliver the keynote at the Gandhi Museum in Houston, now aptly named the Eternal Gandhi Museum — a name that captures the timelessness of a philosophy whose moral force transcends generations. At “1000 Lights for Peace,” I reflected on why Gandhi’s truth force, soul force and non-violence remain urgently relevant in a world of conflict, climate distress, humanitarian crises and technological disruption. Gandhi Jayanti must be more than remembrance; it must be renewal.
I also spoke about how Gandhi’s spirit permeates Swallowing the Sun and shapes its young protagonists — inspiring their engagement with the freedom movement and gradually becoming part of their moral compass. Gandhi is not merely a historical presence in the novel, but a force that shapes how they understand courage, freedom, justice and their own capacity to change history.
A 50-basis-point upgrade. A stronger economic foundation. A higher ceiling for India’s ambitions! 🇮🇳
The World Bank has raised India’s FY27 GDP growth forecast to 7.1%, recognising the remarkable strength of domestic demand despite global uncertainties and external pressures.
More importantly, it has upgraded India’s medium-term potential growth from 6.5% to around 7% - a powerful endorsement of the economy’s underlying dynamism. With 7.2% projected for FY28 and 7% for FY29, the outlook points towards sustained momentum.
Global confidence is converging, with the OECD also forecasting 7.1%, while ADB, S&P Global and Moody’s project 7%. Structural reforms, GST rationalisation and the untapped productivity potential of Artificial Intelligence could provide further impetus to India's economic transformation.
India is not merely exceeding expectations - it is expanding its economic possibilities!
From resilience to resurgence, from ambition to achievement - India’s economic ascent gathers pace! 🇮🇳
Had an excellent meeting with Ms. Meg O’Neill, CEO, @bp_plc, Mr. Kartikeya Dube, Chairman, @bp_India, and their senior leadership today.
bp has a comprehensive engagement and key strategic partnership with India across the energy value chain and is actively participating in exploration of hydrocarbons under OALP Round-10.
Indian PSUs have also partnered with bp for E&P investments across the globe and are now collaborating in retail, natural gas, and compressed biogas which are important areas that are integral to India’s journey towards achieving energy security under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji.
Also witnessed the exchange of Framework for Strategic Cooperation Document between bp and India’s energy Maharatna @ONGC_ .

Heartfelt greetings to the brave men and women of @IAF_MCC on the occasion of #AirForceDay. Their valour, sacrifice and selfless service are a source of immense pride for every Indian.
Their spirit of service shines just as brightly in times of calamities when they are among the first to reach out with a helping hand.
A grateful nation salutes our Air Warriors.
I pay homage to the freedom fighter and relentless champion of India’s democratic values, Bharat Ratna Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Ji, on his death anniversary.
He led the people’s voice & might against the oppressive emergency in the mid 1970s.
Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic incident in which Shri Mahesh Shelke, Manager (Retail Sales), IndianOil, lost his life in Maharashtra while discharging his official duties. He was a part of a team carrying out the takeover of an IndianOil retail outlet in Hingoli district when he was brutally attacked with a sharp weapon. I strongly condemn this heinous and unacceptable act of violence.
I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family in their hour of unimaginable grief and shock.
@PetroleumMin and @IndianOilcl firmly stand with them and will extend all possible support.
The issue has been taken up with the senior-most officials of the Maharashtra Government and Police to ensure swift and strict action against those responsible, in accordance with law.
The safety, dignity and security of our energy-sector personnel, who work tirelessly to serve the nation, remain paramount.
May the departed soul rest in peace.
Om Shanti. 🙏
India’s energy diplomacy, under the leadership of PM Sh @narendramodi Ji, continues to resonate globally as we secure supplies, diversify our energy basket and ensure affordable, sustainable energy despite geopolitical crises.
In this piece in @EconomicTimes, Executive Director of @IEA HE Fatih Birol writes how India’s energy journey has strengthened our resilience; from #PMUjjwala and clean cooking fuel to our expanding world-class refining capacity.
With India set to drive nearly 25% of global energy demand growth over the next two decades, green fuels, biofuels and renewables will be central to powering our growth.

From the Brahmaputra to Houston, Bhupenda’s voice still travels without a passport. 🇮🇳🎶
A beautiful celebration of Dr Bhupen Hazarika — where music became memory, Assam became emotion, and our diaspora became the bridge carrying India’s cultural soul across continents. Grateful to @cgihou and the Assamese community of Greater Houston for keeping that bridge vibrant.
Delighted to celebrate the birth anniversaries of Rashtrapita Mahatma Gandhi Ji and our former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Sh Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji, with Safai Karamchari of the area and some members of my staff and their families today.
Many of the staff members have been a part of our lives for several years. In fact, one of them has been with my family since the time my mother was alive, which makes this bond especially meaningful.
The children are attending reputed schools and doing well in their studies. They keep Lakshmi and me updated about their progress from time to time and often excitedly share their achievements and tell us how they are doing. Their happiness feels like our own, and watching these children grow over the years has been a real joy.
We wish them all success in life.
In our conversation, we discussed how Swachhta has now become a Jan Andolan following the clarion call given by PM Sh @narendramodi Ji from the ramparts of the Red Fort in 2014, and how India has now become Open Defecation Free.
