I started reading a book because I promised someone I'd discuss it with them later.
Turns out, having someone waiting to hear your thoughts is a much better motivator than telling yourself you should read more and never really doing it.
@Ognifedefingo I love that you put understanding and communication side by side. The second part feels underrated because if you can’t make an idea understandable to someone else, maybe you haven’t fully understood it yourself.
@DorcasOyesun The portfolio somehow becomes a second design project. I just spent hours figuring out one thumbnail after realizing I was treating other people’s portfolios like instruction manuals instead of references😭
Spent hours studying case study thumbnails, trying to figure out what mine was supposed to look like.
Then I realized it’s MY portfolio. The recruiter wants to see my creativity.
So I stopped looking for the right answer and designed what felt right.
It turned out awesome!
@nateliason This makes me think about how often we confuse engaging with gamified. Good learning experiences don't necessarily need to make learning feel like something else, they need to make the learning itself satisfying.
@Victor_Webflow I’ve only been on X a few days and this is already proving true. I started learning Rive, shared what I made, and discovered a whole community of designers I wouldn’t have found otherwise. The internet is more valuable when you treat it like a network, not an audience.
I was getting stressed about how long my portfolio is taking.
Then I realized I’m learning Framer, Figma animation and prototyping from scratch.
Maybe I’m not falling behind.
Maybe I’m just building something that takes time to build.
@bluewdrift This is one reason I find neuroplasticity so hopeful. If the brain can reinforce avoidance through repetition, it can also reinforce courage through repetition. The habit is not just what we do, it becomes what feels natural to do.
I started learning Rive after seeing product designers at Razorpay use motion in their portfolios.
Took a YouTube tutorial.
Sat until 3 AM.
Made my first micro-interaction: a Contact button.
It worked.
Apparently, obsession is a pretty good teacher.
Neuroplasticity might be one of the most hopeful things I've learned.
Your brain can keep changing.
At 22, I'm starting to realize I'm nowhere near finished becoming who I want to be.
@AlexCarten_ What's fascinating is that Clarke wasn't really predicting technology as much as he was predicting how technology would change human behavior. “Men will no longer commute. They will communicate.” That's a prediction about society disguised as a prediction about technology.
@yahyavision I think there's a useful distinction between being attached to a design decision and being invested in the problem you're solving. The first makes you defensive but the second makes you willing to change the solution.
@irenemutuzo Not all screen time is equal. A student using YouTube to learn is having a very different experience from endlessly scrolling short form content. Maybe digital wellbeing should measure what technology is doing for us, not just how long we use it.
