PRESIDENT TINUBU WELCOMES AIRBUS PROPOSAL FOR MAINTENANCE AND HANGAR FACILITIES IN NIGERIA, AND URGES ACCELERATED DELIVERY OF ATTACK HELICOPTERS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed world aircraft-maker Airbus' proposal to establish maintenance and hangar facilities in Nigeria as part of a broader effort to position the country as a regional aerospace and aviation services hub.

President Tinubu also emphasised Nigeria’s urgent need for modern helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft capable of supporting security operations, logistics, and national development priorities, in furtherance of his administration's effort to end the intractable security challenges in some parts of the nation.

The President spoke on Thursday, during a meeting with a delegation from Airbus, led by Head of Regional Business Growth Africa and the Middle East, Thierry Cloutet, on the sidelines of the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda.

He told the delegation that his administration was determined to scale up the cordial relationship between both parties, leveraging the company's comparative advantage in military aircraft and aerospace development.

The President called for the accelerated delivery of the three Apache helicopters already ordered by Nigeria to support ongoing security and counterterrorism operations, underscoring his administration's determination to deploy all assets against terrorists across the nation.

“Nigeria needs attack helicopters urgently that can be used to confront and overwhelm terrorists. That is my priority now," President Tinubu said.

Nigeria's acquisition of the Airbus C-295 platform, broader defence aviation cooperation, as well as aircraft leasing and financing models, including export credit arrangements, sale-and-lease-back structures, and long-term aircraft financing solutions aimed at improving airlines' access to aircraft and reducing sector financing constraints, were also discussed.

In furtherance of strengthening the existing relationship between the company and Nigeria, President Tinubu also discussed with the Airbus delegation the possibility of establishing an aviation leasing company to unlock value along Nigeria’s aviation value chain and improve financing access for domestic operators.

Cloutet commended President Tinubu's economic reforms and the efforts to stabilise Nigeria’s aviation sector. He reaffirmed the company’s interest in supporting the country’s long-term aerospace development objectives.

In support of the administration's policy to modernise the nation's Aviation sector, Cloutet proposed what he described as a “360-degree engagement” model with Nigeria.

The engagement, according to Cloutet, will cover commercial aviation, military aircraft cooperation, human capital development, sustainability initiatives, operational hubs and maintenance infrastructure.

It will also include collaboration on satellite and Earth observation.

It is not every state visit or diplomatic engagement that ends with flashy headlines, staged signing ceremonies, or social media theatrics. Real diplomacy goes much deeper. It is about strategic dialogue, building investor confidence, strengthening security cooperation, advancing trade discussions, and positioning the country for long-term economic gain which President Tinubu did all of and more in Kigali and several other state visits.

Comparing Nigeria’s diplomatic approach to that of the United States without context is misleading. The U.S. operates within a global influence structure and economic system built over many decades. Nigeria’s engagements are tailored to our own realities, development priorities, and national interests.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has secured significant investment commitments across energy, technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and solid minerals through sustained international engagements and ongoing reforms.

These outcomes are not achieved overnight or at ceremonial tables, but through consistent negotiation and policy direction.

The same administration being criticised today has:

• Removed fuel subsidy to redirect resources toward development priorities.
• Unified the FX market to improve transparency and restore investor confidence.
• Attracted major commitments into oil & gas, tech, infrastructure, and agriculture.
• Expanded student loan access for Nigerian youths.
• Increased FAAC allocations to states.
• Advanced initiatives around CNG, manufacturing support, and food security.

Yes, diplomacy is not tourism. Agreed. But diplomacy is also not a reality TV show where every engagement must end in staged photo-ops before it is considered meaningful.

The President’s engagements in the United Kingdom and other global platforms are part of a broader effort to reposition Nigeria, rebuild investor trust, strengthen strategic alliances, and unlock long-term opportunities that will ultimately benefit Nigerians.

Reducing state visits to clothing, convoy size, or delegation numbers while ignoring the constitutional, diplomatic, and security responsibilities attached to presidential movements is simply dishonest and reeks of a myopic view on your part.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on rebuilding the economy, attracting investments, strengthening institutions, and creating sustainable opportunities for Nigerians today and for generations to come.

Perhaps, before attempting to lecture on governance and consistency, it would help to first reflect on the importance of stability especially for those who have moved across three different political parties in the space of six months.

Beyond the global increase in oil prices, S&P’s eventual upgrade of Nigeria’s credit rating—for the first time since 2012—reiterates the resilience and commitment of the current administration to holistically reset the trajectory of our nation’s economy, without being distracted by its adversaries.

Some of the other reasons given by S&P for the improved rating include:
• Steady increase in daily oil production: The administration has overseen a drastic improvement in oil production between 2023 and the present through enhanced security measures and strategic investments.

• Implementation of tax reforms: According to S&P, the implementation of tax reforms by this administration is expected to broaden the tax base from previously narrow levels. This underpins a steady decline in Nigeria's debt-to-revenue ratio to 338% in 2026, compared to 500% in 2023.

• Removal of wasteful fuel subsidies and liberalization of the FX market: Beyond the initial decision, the administration's ability to sustain these policies over the last three years heavily informed S&P’s positive outlook.

• Improvement in local refining capacity: This is driven primarily by the Dangote Refinery’s increased daily production.

• Implementation of Executive Order 9: Recently signed by President Tinubu, this order centralizes petroleum revenue management by directing all oil and gas inflows into the Federation Account.

What next for the economy?
According to S&P:
• Nigeria’s current account surplus is expected to grow to 5.8% of GDP in 2026, up from 4.8% in 2025.
• GDP per capita is expected to rise by an average of 1.4% per year until 2029, a significant improvement over the 1% yearly contraction averaged over the past decade.
• The inflation rate is expected to average 17.7% in 2026, before falling below 10% by 2028.
