100% of Somaliland’s foreign policy issues could be fixed with one simple move:
Learning to say "No."
Bal wuxuun diid.
If these international actors can get everything they need from you, at zero political cost, whilst still treating you as a region of Somalia, what incentive do they have to take the diplomatically bold (and politically costly) step of recognition?
Breaking 🚨AFRICOM has removed from its official Facebook and X platforms the portion of Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson’s interview yesterday that referred to Somaliland, suggesting the remarks may have been spontaneous rather than part of the prepared public messaging.
The move comes today, following the visit of SOCAFRICA Commander Maj. Gen. Claude K. Tudor Jr. to Hargeisa. AFRICOM has not provided an explanation for the edit.
SL currently controls nearly 90% of its territory and over 95% of its coastline.
It holds 100% full control over:
.Its primary international airports
.Its main economic hub & seaport
. Strategic commercial transit routes
A populace that stands 100% united behind sovereignty.
For decades, Western governments have prioritized mogadisho over Somaliland, despite long record of peace, stability, and democratic governance. The question is no longer why SL exists—it's how the world can be persuaded to recognize the reality on the ground. #Somaliland
Rebuilding #Somaliland's institutions requires moving past previous appointments that favor proximity over proficiency. Let’s demand the most qualified candidates, not just campaign supporters, are selected. The Cirro gov. must set a new standard for competence.

US @USSOCAF are in Somaliland today.
Here is why this is important:
1 - There is no Al-Shabaab or ISIS in Somaliland. So why are they here? It is the NDAA 2023, which commands US diplomats and military officials to engage with Somaliland for 5 years as part of US Indo-Pacific policy and overall Somaliland engagement evaluation.
2 - Head of AFRICOM stated earlier that there are no plans for a US base in Berbera. I agree, and we never said AFRICOM needs another base. The one that needs a new base is US CENTCOM, which, after Bab Al Mandab crisis, the the closure of tens of Gulf bases and the fiasco at Diego Garcia, needs a new base and Berbera is an excellent replacement for all the above.
3 - AFRICOM also stated that the US recognises Somalia, not Somaliland. We all know recognition comes from Trump and Rubio, not AFRICOM, but this has been an opportunity in X to remind everyone why Hillary's Single Somalia Policy is a failure. See @sarahadams's thread.
4 - This is the most important part. This relationship is part of what I call Somaliland's Deterrence Policy. Our foreign policy is NOT only about full recognition. This is the NDAA in action. It gives a signal to Turkey and China that:
"Hey, we are here. You can't play dirty games with Somaliland"

"The United States 🇺🇸 is ready to work closely with Somaliland on strategic matters of mutual interest, and to further strengthen cooperation, information sharing, the exchange of expertise, and future security collaboration."
Major General Claude K. Tudor Jr.
Commander of U.S. forces in Africa.
Republic of #Somaliland President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi held a strategic meeting with U.S. SOCAFRICA Commander Maj. Gen. Claude K. Tudor Jr. to discuss bolstering security cooperation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
President Irro @Abdirahmanirro emphasized that Somaliland's 850 km coastline and 35+ years of stability require direct engagement from partners for any regional maritime security initiatives.
Hargeisa project has direct flights to Garowe and Mogadishu 🇸🇴 in Somalia but NO flights connecting Hargeisa to the rest of Somaliland’s own regions and cities.
No flights Hargeisa to Buroa/erigavo/Aynaba..
Let that sink in…
Jacayl aan laya wadin.
Somaliland waxa u qaadtey u dhaqanto sidii dawlad
Lakiin USA waa inoo arkaa (rebel state)

Though my former Senator and I don’t agree on many things, working on strengthening the US-Somaliland partnership is something we are totally aligned on. Somaliland can, and must, be a bipartisan priority for the US government, and I look forward to supporting this endeavor!
We thank @SenTedCruz, Chairman of the @SenateForeign Africa Subcommittee, for his letter to @SecRubio urging a separate U.S. Travel Advisory and Diplomatic Security assessment for Somaliland. For nearly three decades, Somaliland has been a beacon of stability and democracy in the Horn of Africa. It is time U.S. policy reflects that reality.

Recent false and misleading reports have mischaracterized U.S. diplomacy in the Horn of Africa as an attempt to court an “anti-Ethiopian alliance.” That narrative is both inaccurate and needlessly inflammatory.
The United States works with Ethiopia and all countries across the Horn of Africa and the wider Red Sea region to advance shared priorities.
Engagement with one regional partner should not be distorted into hostility toward another. U.S. diplomacy is not about creating rival blocs or deepening divisions—it is about working constructively with all partners to prevent conflict and promote lasting peace and security.
Today, the Saudis are effectively cut off from exporting or importing product via waterways - both the Iranian closure of Hormoz and the Yemeni blockade (Bab al-Mandab/Red Sea entrance) have ensured this.
Ironically, #KSA recognized in the UAE-Israel alliance a plan to do exactly the same last year when Tel Aviv moved into Somaliland and Emirati-backed troops launched a military surge in Yemen's south for further control of the port-heavy territory. [See map below to visualize how Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv together could sever Saudi Arabia's access to major shipping routes.]
The Israel-UAE axis sought to neuter and potentially even break up Saudi Arabia, and Riyadh finally recognized the threat.
Conversely, the Iranians - at least all officials I've spoken to over many years before this war - have always sought to prevent the kingdom's destabilization. They view a Saudi internal collapse as an event that could radiate throughout the region, and hamper West Asia's geopolitical/economic development for decades to come, which malign foreign actors would easily exploit.
Riyadh can make an easy decision now to partner with Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkiye and craft a new security model in the Persian Gulf, including the design of land-based trade and pipeline infrastructure that benefit all West Asian stakeholders. No one will be excluded.
Or it can play along with this US war, see Iran as its prime enemy, destabilize it, then be left naked for when the Israelis and Emiratis come for Saudi Arabia - with tacit US approval and active UK assistance, of course.
