Avalanche's co-founder helped build a proof-of-work currency six years before Bitcoin...
Emin Gün Sirer (@el33th4xor) co-designed Karma at Cornell in 2003 with two of his students. His bios call it the first currency to mint coins through proof-of-work, though Wei Dai's 1998 b-money proposal sketched the idea earlier.
Karma aimed to stop freeloading on file-sharing networks by tracking what each user gave and took, long before Bitcoin introduced proof-of-work money.
In 2013, he and Ittay Eyal found a flaw in Bitcoin's mining rules. A group of miners could secretly hold back the blocks they found, then release them at the right moment to wipe out rivals' work. Even a minority of miners could earn more than they should. The attack is now known as "selfish mining".
He later co-founded @AvaLabs, the company behind Avalanche (@avax), and still runs it as CEO.
.@NYSE's announcement is a clear signal: Avalanche is positioned to be one of the L1 winners of institutional adoption.
When an institution of this size and standing treats @avax as a leading blockchain for core market infrastructure, other serious financial players are likely to follow.
Six years ago today, we launched Avalanche.
The idea was audacious: challenge decades of assumptions about consensus and build a system that could scale far beyond what blockchains could do at the time.
We knew what this architecture could unlock. So we built it.
Six years later, Avalanche powers global financial markets, cross-border payments, enterprise systems, and critical infrastructure.
And I believe we are still in the early chapters of what this architecture will make possible.
NYSE testing Avalanche means they will choose Avalanche.
If @RobinhoodCrypto tested Avalanche L1s they would have chosen it over an L2 and avoided the congestion and downtime they are experiencing now.
No one with a brain will ever choose a single server vs a datacenter. All they need is figure it exists.
Interoperable infrastructure that scales on demand doesn’t congest and crash.
JUST IN: NYSE has spent the past year testing Avalanche technology
Ava Labs President Charley Cooper said the exchange has been testing Avalanche as part of its plans to bring tokenized securities into traditional financial markets.
Did @NYSE just go live with its own Avalanche L1? 👀
A new chain labeled “nyse” gone live less than 24 hours ago with 8 validators as Avalanche L1. Even more interesting: 3 of those validators are staking 100,000 AVAX each with 300,000 AVAX across just three validators. If this is officially connected to NYSE and built to settle tokenized assets onchain, this could be a very significant development.
Its just a matter of time Avalanche becoming part of Wall Street’s onchain settlement infrastructure?
There is no escape🔺. $AVAX
