I finally got my notes updated on the new Texas “#schoolchoice” bill, SB2, since it left the Senate floor.
One item from my last set of notes that I found extremely dangerous was removed on the Senate floor. Good! Unfortunately more items that cause concern were added. Bad!
Remember, this is a true vendor bill meaning it is for the benefit of vendors & not Texan children like the bill’s author, @SenCreighton, has claimed. He’s just helping siphon our money into his donors pockets.
$11.34B in 5 years time for 98k students to leave public schools for a “private” government school = fraud, deception, manipulation & a true scam on taxpayers.
Email all of the House Reps, tell them to vote no on SB2.

The new Texas voucher bill, SB2, LBB Actuarial Impact Statement tells us exactly what the plan is.
The governments documents always tell you what they are going to do before they do it then the politicians, lobbyists & bootlickers work the spin in an attempt to gaslight & deceive taxpayers.
“there is capacity for some outflow of teacher employment from public schools to private schools”
The plan is for the donors to open faux private schools that accept vouchers. Public money funding a private business with no elected board, taxation without representation. Those faux private schools will be just like how charters start out, good at first then sticky fingers of public money with no oversight & the crash.
SB2 will leave Texas with no options for schooling besides government schooling in a very short period of time. It’s the opposite of choice.
The time to raise hell is now.
The State’s financial analysis of the Senate voucher bill found it would destabilize the TX Teacher Retirement System:
“The fund can’t maintain itself. The math isn’t mathing.”
“Texas Senate Bill 2 could impact teacher retirements, analysis indicates.” https://t.co/3XS2HzyY5R
Why are our public schools failing? And more importantly, who is holding Abbott-appointed TEA Commissioner Mike Morath accountable for the disastrous outcomes under his leadership?
Morath has held his position since 2016—long enough to completely reshape the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Yet, instead of improving schools, his policies have centralized control, expanded bureaucracy, and funneled billions of taxpayer dollars into corporate partnerships with little transparency.
How many children have been harmed by his restructuring of TEA? The #TxLege has given him unfettered access to public tax dollars, allowing him to dictate education policy without meaningful oversight. Meanwhile, student performance continues to decline, and local school boards are losing their power.
Government-regulated #SchoolChoice is NOT the solution. It’s a Trojan horse for more government control, not educational freedom. If we don’t hold Morath and TEA accountable, who will?
Under Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner Mike Morath, a web of public-private partnerships has been funneling billions of taxpayer dollars into organizations and corporations that profit from government-controlled education. These partnerships are not about improving education for students—they are about power, money, and centralized control.
Some of the biggest beneficiaries of Morath’s TEA spending spree:
•Transforming Education So Every Young Person Thrives (TNTP) – Received $14 million+ thanks to Morath’s policies.
•Cambium – Secured a staggering $88 million contract.
•Amplify – Awarded $15.6 million from TEA for the 2023-24 school year, but also rakes in millions more from individual school districts and Education Service Centers (ESCs) across Texas.
•IDEA Public Schools – Has received over $1 BILLION in taxpayer funding!
•Houston ISD (@HoustonISD) – Received $897.19 million from TEA.
•Region 10 ESC (@Region10ESC) – Took in $284 million from TEA in 2023-24 alone.
This massive transfer of funds to public-private partnership charter networks, and regional bureaucracies undermines local control and centralizes decision-making away from parents and locally elected school boards. Who really benefits? Not the students or their families—but the corporate education industry and the policymakers in their pockets.
Texans deserve transparency and accountability in education funding. Follow the money, and you’ll see exactly why “School Choice” and TEA’s expansion of public-private partnerships are not about parental rights, but about controlling the entire education system.
Abbott's school voucher program fails on two fronts: The vouchers don't cover actual private school costs, putting them out of reach for working families, while simultaneously taking money from public schools.
This isn't about choice - it's about dismantling public education.
"This taxpayer-funded voucher scam is a grift. The goal of men like Jeff Yass & Greg Abbott is to extract all worth from our neighborhood schools to maximize short-term profits–it is the private equity model of education."
We must demand better for our #txed public schools.
.@GregAbbott_TX came after Darby, Lambert & VanDeaver with his out-of-state billionaire buyout of #txlege
They all beat him!
Abbott didn’t even bother to oppose Geren, Dean & Bell.
Conservative rural Republicans hate vouchers!
No vouchers in TX!
Ever!
