A church in Nantucket has CANCELLED its annual 4th of July reading of the Declaration and Bill of Rights after 25 years. The reason? Its leaders now believe the founding documents were bound up with the ideas of "whiteness" and have been "unequally applied" across American history.
But the church forgot the most important part.
It's true that the promises of America weren't applied equally: Slavery, Jim Crow, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the denial for generations of women's voting rights.
But what CHANGED all that? What philosophies and documents did brave pioneers like Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. utilize to fight these injustices?
Our founding documents. The very documents that this church is now calling problematic. They're not the problem. They're the solution. We must live up to them, not change them to fit our current worldviews.
The New Yorker recently released an article about why patriotism is "problematic." If you grew up only seeing America's sins, then I can see how you hold this view. But EVERY country has its sins. The bigger question is: Is it striving to be better?
That's what real patriotism is. It's not flag waving, MAGA hat-wearing, partisan jingoism. It's a love for your country and a wonder of what it could be and what it has been for many: a refuge, a promise, a stubborn belief that ordinary people can govern themselves.
Loving our country doesnโt mean ignoring the ledger. Two things can be true at the same time. Patriotism is seeing the scars of our history and still choosing to sit at the table.
The idea that 'ALL men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness', is still worth striving for. I donโt see anyone at the table coming up with something better.
Today we pause, reflect, and remember. We are grateful for the brave men and women whose sacrifice paved the road ahead. From all of us at Aptera, thank you ๐บ๐ธ ๐
