Falsehood in War-Time: Containing an Assortment of Lies Circulated Throughout the Nations During the Great War by Arthur Ponsonby (1928)
This 1928 book by British MP and pacifist Arthur Ponsonby is one of the most shocking and explicit insider exposés ever written about how the British (and Allied) government deliberately manufactured and spread lies during World War I. Ponsonby watched the propaganda machine from inside Parliament and names names, dates, and documents to prove that falsehoods were not accidents they were official policy. The entire campaign, run by the secret War Propaganda Bureau at Wellington House and later Crewe House, was aimed squarely at Germany. Its foundation was “the myth of Germany’s sole responsibility” for the war. Every atrocity story, faked photo, and doctored document painted Germany as the “undiluted criminal” so that ordinary people would accept the war as a righteous crusade.
Ponsonby states it plainly: governments “cannot afford to tell the truth” and “must at the outset present a one-sided case in justification of its action.” The two main reasons were (1) to justify themselves by depicting the enemy as an undiluted criminal, and (2) to inflame popular passion sufficiently to secure recruits for the continuance of the struggle. Without this myth, there would be “no reason and no will for war.” In Britain, where conscription came late, the public had to be whipped into “a sort of collective hysteria” with sham ideals and constant hatred so men would rush to enlist. Propaganda also kept morale high (victories exaggerated, defeats minimized), swayed neutral countries (especially America), and misled the enemy. The psychological side of war was considered just as vital as the military side, so “the stimulus of indignation, horror, and hatred must be assiduously and continuously pumped into the public mind.”
The operation was run directly by the British government. David Lloyd George appointed Charles Masterman to head the War Propaganda Bureau (Wellington House) in September 1914 from its secret London headquarters so covert that many MPs did not even know it existed. It later became the Department of Information under John Buchan and then the full Ministry of Information. Crewe House, the enemy-propaganda branch, was placed under Lord Northcliffe in 1918. Financing came entirely from the British Treasury public taxpayer money, with a secret budget that reached around £2 million. Parliament itself was largely kept in the dark about the full scale.
The lies were deliberately funneled through privately owned newspapers, magazines, books, films, and pamphlets so they would look independent and credible. Key press barons cooperated or were given official roles: Lord Northcliffe (owner of The Times and Daily Mail) was put in charge of Crewe House; Lord Beaverbrook (owner of the Daily Express) became Minister of Information. The Neutral Press Committee fed “news” to foreign papers, Wellington House mailed propaganda directly to 512 American newspapers and 160,000 U.S. citizens, and cinema was added because it was called “the bible of the working-class.” The government used the Defence of the Realm Act to control cables, wireless, and what could be printed. This was not rogue journalists it was an official, government-orchestrated system that used and directed the major privately owned press.
Ponsonby systematically debunks over twenty major falsehoods.
The Corpse Factory: Germans were accused of boiling down their own dead soldiers into glycerine, fats, and pig food. Detailed “eyewitness” accounts described bodies wired into bundles and fed into vats. It was a deliberate mistranslation of the German word for animal carcasses. Officials knew it was false.
They turned neighbors into enemies, justified starvation blockades that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Ponsonby’s core warning still hits hard: “When war is declared, truth is the first casualty.”

Here's what we are about to repeat.

Congress is currently moving legislation that would merge U.S. and Israeli military development and intelligence operations. Before you decide how you feel about that, you should know the history of this particular partnership.

Israel is the only country that has ever attacked a U.S. Navy vessel and faced zero retaliation. In 1967, Israeli forces attacked the USS Liberty in international waters. Thirty-four American sailors were killed. One hundred seventy-four were wounded. The U.S. government quietly accepted Israel's "mistaken identity" explanation and moved on.

Jonathan Pollard was an American naval intelligence analyst who spent seventeen years stealing some of the most sensitive military secrets in U.S. history and handing them to Israel. He was convicted of espionage in 1987. Israel paid him a salary, gave him citizenship, and celebrated him as a hero when he emigrated there in 2020.

The Lavon Affair. In 1954, Israeli intelligence operatives planted bombs at American and British civilian targets inside Egypt. The plan was to blame Egyptian nationalists and destabilize the region. The operation was exposed. Israel eventually acknowledged it.

The FBI and CIA have both formally identified Israel as one of the most aggressive collectors of intelligence against U.S. officials on American soil. Last week, NBC News reported that the Defense Intelligence Agency raised its counterintelligence threat designation for Israel to "critical," the highest level possible. In 2019, Politico reported that the FBI suspected Israel of planting surveillance devices near the White House and other federal facilities to monitor U.S. officials. Israel denied it. Whatever happened to that investigation?

One attack on a U.S. warship. One spy inside U.S. intelligence. One covert bombing campaign targeting American civilians, blamed on Arabs. One surveillance operation aimed at the White House.

And now we are proposing to merge our military development and intelligence apparatus with theirs.

Do you remember? Because the decision-makers in Washington are counting on the fact that you don't.
