This is how I view films in their basic purpose. The intent. The drive behind it. While i dont want to say budget and casting are big factors, it can tip the scales. Each film is rated on a film by film basis and not necessarily a rating on its overall quality as a movie.

Art - not a film for general audiences. Very outside the box, but made with purpose. (The Holy Mountain, Begotten, Cried and Whispers)
Film - standard well made, well structured film. (Lord of the Rings, The Godfather, Gone With the Wind)
Movie - your average movie. Has a budget, was executed as expected. Staus quo. (The Departed, The Fugitive, Avatar)
Flick - lower brow adventure. Smaller budget poorly acted, badly written, but still watchable. (Most films, tbh)
Crap - z grade films made with no direction or purpose. (Manos, the Hands of Fate)

This system is circular, in that Art and Crap are next to each other.

Quality:
My overall feeling about the finished product. Could be bias and definitely subject to change.

My Favorite Films

Paper Moon (1973)

Director Peter Bogdanovich's (The Last Picture Show) 1973 depression era comedy adpated from Joe David Brown's novel "Addie Pray" is most known for Tatum O'Neal winning an Oscar at age 10. Daughter of Ryan O'Neal (who also stars along with her), Tatum's career never really went anywhere after this and became more famous for being married to tennis star John McEnroe and her strained relationship with her farher.
But none of that should take away from this marvelous movie. Filmed in crisp black and white, Paper Moon is about con man Moze Pray, who makes his living by conducting a bible ordering scam on recently widowed women, who arrives at the funeral of one of his lovers. Her orphaned daughter Addie, with no family nearby willing to take her in, is there and many of the people at the funeral suspect Moze to be her father. When he agrees to drive Addie to some relatives in Missouri, he cons the brother of the man who caused the accident that killed Addie's mom, but Addie overhears and when they go to a diner for some food, the little quiet girl shows her resolve and demands that Moze pay her back the money that was rightfully hers. Thus begins their adventure, as the go across the midwest, teaming up to con their way to Missouri as they begin to develp a close bond, through thick or thin. Or in this film, Madaline Kahn one of the funniest woman to have existed. Known for her roles in the Mel Brooks' films "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles" (where she earned back to back best supporting actress oscar nominations with this after "Paper Moon"), Kahn has a short but unforgettable performance as Trixie Delight, a woman that Moze meets and, much to Addie's disdain (as she now has to fight for Moze's attention), brings along for their road trip. Trixie's young attendant. Imogene (played by a talented P.J. Johnson, who only made one more film and basically vanished) is also irritated with the situation and makes a good ally with Addie. Randy Quaid has a very small role (just like in The Last Picture Show) as well as John Hillerman (Magnum, P.I.).
It's really refreshing to watch a comedy with such beautiful cinematography that really makes you feel stranded in the middle of the great plains. Its funny, surprisingly touching (I still cry during the last shot), and while I won't argue the validity of Tatum's Oscar win, she had the gift of deadpan comedy and is really the main actress of the film. Give it a shot and tell me what YOU think.

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Movie (I had a hard time with this one and I could change it to Film. Thoughts?)
