Several years back, I kept getting a call from a strange number and ignoring it.

A few days later, I get a text saying, "if you get a call from an xxx number, pick up...it's Michael, he's calling you from jail."

So I pick up the next time the number calls, and sure enough, it's one of my friends from college. He's been in jail for months, awaiting trial for a marijuana-related charge. He's calling old friends to catch up because he's bored. We hadn't spoken in years.

I let him know that in the years since we had spoken, my brother went to law school and is now a practicing defense attorney. I tell my friend he should reach out to my brother and provide his number.

Michael does contact my brother. Turns out my bro is law school buddies with the ADA of the county where Michael is facing these charges. Brother makes a call and gets all charges dropped.

My friend calls me a few weeks later after he's out of jail and says:

"Allyson, is this what white privilege feels like?"
