A Spoiler Alert About the End Times

I have a spoiler alert about the end times.

It isn't going to happen.

There is not going to be a rapture in which millions disappear while others are left behind. There is not going to be a seven-year tribulation, a literal mark of the beast, an epic supernatural battle between God and Satan, or a lake of fire consuming the wicked.

The fact that some people read the Book of Revelation and other biblical texts as predictions of future events tells us more about how we have been taught to interpret these writings than it does about reality itself.

The traditional apocalyptic narrative imagines history moving according to a cosmic script. At some point, the drama reaches its climax. God intervenes, evil is defeated, the righteous are rewarded, the wicked are punished, and the world is remade through catastrophe. The details vary, but the basic storyline remains the same.

I have several problems with this narrative.

First, the illusion of inevitability breeds passivity.

If history is already moving toward a predetermined ending, then human responsibility becomes secondary. Why invest ourselves in building a more just, compassionate, and sustainable world if destruction is inevitable? Why address climate change, poverty, violence, or political dysfunction if we are merely watching a divine screenplay unfold? Apocalyptic certainty often weakens the very capacities that human flourishing requires: imagination, responsibility, and collective action.

Second, the illusion of divine intervention undermines ownership.

The world's suffering is not the result of Satan, demons, spiritual warfare, or invisible forces conspiring against humanity. The world's suffering exists because human beings have created systems, institutions, and habits that produce suffering. We exploit. We dominate. We neglect. We deceive. We divide.

Likewise, the solution is not God descending from the clouds to rescue us from ourselves.

The healing of the world will not fall from the sky. It must rise from within us. The future depends upon human beings developing greater wisdom, compassion, courage, and maturity. The responsibility belongs to us because the future belongs to us.

Third, the illusion of opposing sides may be among the most dangerous ideas we have inherited.

Apocalyptic thinking divides reality into camps: saved and damned, righteous and wicked, God and Satan, us and them. It encourages people to imagine themselves as participants in a cosmic conflict rather than members of a shared human family.

Yet many of the greatest catastrophes in history have emerged from precisely this kind of thinking. Whenever people become convinced that they embody righteousness while others embody evil, cruelty becomes easier to justify. The line between good and evil does not separate groups of people. It runs through every human heart.

The future will not be secured by defeating an enemy. It will be secured by learning how to live together despite our differences.

Martin Luther King Jr. expressed it more clearly than most:

"We must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools."

The choice remains before us.

Ironically, the word apocalypse does not mean destruction. It means unveiling. It means revelation. It means the disclosure of something hidden.

The deepest apocalypse is not waiting somewhere in the future. It is happening every time we see reality more clearly. The great unveiling of our age may be the realization that no one is coming to save us. This is not because we have been abandoned, but because the capacities required for our survival have always been entrusted to us.

Countless children have been traumatized by end-times theology. Many grew up fearing they would be left behind, condemned, abandoned, or subjected to divine wrath. Others were taught to imagine a God who expresses glory through punishment and whose final solution to human failure is destruction.

Чтобы понять и осознать истинную природу реальности необходимо думать не как человек, а как сама Вселенная созданный по её образу и подобию. И тогда, имея ключ, Вы откроете все двери.
