Victims of forced conscription should not be treated the same as those who chose to join a terrorist organization.

Today I joined members of the Iranian-Canadian community on Parliament Hill to demand that the government stop targeting conscripts and deport real IRGC terrorists.

Many of these conscripts have been among the most vocal opponents of the IRGC.

Conservatives have already shown the government a simple legislative fix to this problem. Thus far, Liberals have failed to adopt that fix.

In Iran, skipping the draft means you can't get a job, buy a house, or even get a SIM card in your name. It's complete social exile. Expecting 18 year olds to destroy their lives to avoid service makes zero sense.

Forced conscription in a dictatorship is forced labor, plain and simple. Treating an 18 year old who had no choice like he voluntarily joined the regime makes zero sense.

Hundreds of Iranian families are facing fear and uncertainty because their history of compulsory conscription is being used against them in their immigration cases.

These are not abstract cases. They are parents, children, professionals, students, and members of our communities who have built their lives in Canada.

We are not asking Canada to compromise national security. We are asking for fairness, due process, and a clear distinction between those who willingly served the IRGC and those who were forced into conscription.

Listing the IRGC as a terror group was the right thing for Canada to do and I am glad to have advocated for it for many years.

However, despite assurances by the Liberal government that they would tailor the listing so as to avoid harming conscripts (and delaying the listing purportedly to address this issue), I'm hearing from many community members that the listing is harming ordinary people with no ties to the regime except having been conscripted for mandatory service. This is especially frustrating when the government seems to be doing very little else to combat Iranian regime officials' presence in Canada or Iranian transnational repression.

I've often said that Iran's regime is like a hostage-taker. The goal of our policies should be to harm the hostage-taker without, to the extent possible, harming the hostages.

I hope that the Government of Canada holds consultations with affected stakeholders to figure out how to minimize harm for ordinary people. I also hope that the Conservatives, who will most likely form the next government, work to find solutions to this issue.

Hundreds of Iranian conscripts are now facing inadmissibility to Canada because of compulsory service they never chose.

Among those affected are highly educated professionals, researchers, and academics who have built their lives in Canada and are contributing to the country’s advancement across many fields.

They did not join the IRGC. They were compelled to serve by a regime many had spent years trying to escape. Now, people who have spent years contributing to Canada are being put at risk because of circumstances they had no control over.

A conscript is not an IRGC member. A forced assignment is not a chosen affiliation. Canada must distinguish between genuine threats and ordinary people who were themselves victims of the regime.

This CBC investigation puts a human face on a deeply concerning issue that Canada cannot afford to ignore. Please read and share.
