Preventing extinction is not enough. Threatened species also need support to recover.

Leonardo DiCaprio has highlighted two initiatives announced at COP17. Led by Armenia and Colombia, 17 countries have joined the Coalition of Action to Recover Endangered Species (CARES) to accelerate efforts to prevent extinctions and support measurable species recovery.

Meanwhile, nine philanthropic funders and organizations, including Re:wild, have formed the Species Recovery Alliance, aligning more than $500 million over five years to support species recovery worldwide.

Both initiatives share a common goal: helping the world’s most threatened species recover.

📜 🌿On 16 October, at the conclusion of the plenary session of the Leaders for Nature Summit, the Yerevan Declaration - Taking Action for Nature was delivered.
The Declaration reaffirms commitment to the implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including the mission to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and achieve the vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.

The opening ceremony of the Leaders’ Summit, held ahead of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), took place at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan.

The event began with an official welcoming ceremony for Heads of State and Government and leaders of international organizations participating in the Summit. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan welcomed UN Secretary-General António Guterres, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze, President of Zanzibar Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Speaker of the Council of the Nation of Algeria Azouz Nasri, and Secretary General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo.

The other heads of delegations participating in the Summit were welcomed by Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan.

The official opening ceremony of the Leaders’ Summit then followed.
