Businessman Hangwani Maumela Arrested in R326m Tembisa Hospital Fraud Case

Businessman Hangwani Maumela has been arrested for his alleged role in a R326 million fraud scheme linked to Tembisa Hospital. The arrest forms part of an investigation into large-scale corruption in procurement contracts between 2019 and 2022.

Authorities say Maumela and his associates manipulated tenders and siphoned funds meant for essential hospital supplies. He is now facing charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering.

The AFU has already moved to freeze his assets, including four Lamborghinis, a Bentley, a boat, and luxury properties. Officials said the lavish purchases were made with proceeds of crime.

The probe follows whistle-blower Babita Deokaran’s findings. She flagged suspicious tenders before her assassination in 2021, a killing widely believed to be linked to her anti-corruption work.
