Earlier today, we were delighted to be joined by MP Mike Morrice of the Green Party of Canada at a press conference in the National Press Gallery in Ottawa to denounce Azerbaijan’s abhorrent human rights and environmental record, and highlight Baku’s unsuitability to host the upcoming COP29 conference.

The ANCC’s position is clear. We call on the Canadian government not to afford Azerbaijan the privilege of hosting any Canadian elected official at the COP29. Canada must make it clear that it stands against the exploitation of global platforms by autocratic regimes seeking to cleanse their image. We urge the international community to take this opportunity to expose and denounce Azerbaijan’s abhorrent human rights record and environmental misconduct.

Azerbaijan’s bid to host COP29 is a blatant attempt to cover up its abysmal human rights record and near-total reliance on oil and gas. Reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Freedom House reveal a regime that suppresses dissent, detains Armenian POWs, and erases Armenian cultural heritage. Despite claiming to shift to renewable energy, Azerbaijan’s fossil fuel-driven economy contradicts the very purpose of the climate conference. Hosting COP29 in such a politically unstable and authoritarian country raises serious concerns about the integrity of the event. We must demand transparency, justice, and accountability—not allow Azerbaijan to use COP29 as a tool for greenwashing.
