🎉Our new study published today in @LancetMicrobe: SpyCATS longitudinal household cohort study of #StrepA carriage and infection and transmission in The Gambia! https://t.co/Mmx0MCux9M [1/7]
BREAKING: Sunak is reneging on many of the UK’s net zero commitments. The worst decision of any Prime Minister in my lifetime. A betrayal of our children, of our international responsibilities, and scientifically illiterate.
Incredibly important work on Group A Strep @edwinarmitage@mrcunitgambia. Rheumatic heart disease is devastating and kills children across Africa; morally unacceptable that this has become a disease of the poor and gets so little funding and attention.
#StrepA is a major cause of pharyngitis, pyoderma and iGAS globally, but the devastating rheumatic heart disease now mostly affects low-income countries, and marginalised communities within high-income countries. Why? Here's what we're doing to investigate @mrcunitgambia !
Our analysis @IPPR of the immigration stats released today reveals that:
👉🏽Most arriving by small boat win asylum when their cases are considered
👉🏽 Cases awaiting asylum have doubled in the past 2 years
👉🏽 Resettlement numbers outside Afghan and Ukraine schemes remain very low
Tonight the government succeeded in forcing through the Nationality & Borders Bill. Everyone working in the refugee sector has been united in pushing back but we failed. This isn't the end though - kindness and decency WILL ultimately prevail 🧡 we are absolutely sure of it x

Research evidence strongly suggests that giving low income families more money improves children’s outcomes. Here’s our systematic review. It’s not exactly a shock result but it seems to need saying. And saying again and again and again and again https://t.co/LqEz3xL8N8
Not sure that non medical people quite understand the immense skill of intensive care nurses. Imagine the attention to detail & concentration required to make up all of these infusions, set to correct rate, ensure each is titrated appropriately to vital signs, know when finishing

FAO healthcare professionals, add your name to an open letter to have the "Right to food" written into the law. Vital issue in view of child poverty and food insecurity. #BuildBackFairer
Fascinating to hear about work of PhD fellows:
@BonellAna climate change & pregnancy outcomes @Ceri_Evans immunology of HIV-exposed uninfected infants
Wrapped up by an attempt at carol singing, piano from Zimbabwe 🇿🇼🎼. Hilarious, but this Zoom activity is not going to catch on.
Just a cheeky plug for Cathy @catherinesings and Eimear's podcast #operabluffs making me laugh out loud on the tube this week. Utterly vital opera trivia with frequent detours into true crime, politics and feminism. If only we were all this talented.
The PM said in Parliament that child poverty had gone down since 2010. And cited a specific number. He was wrong. Child poverty went up. Is there an obligation for him to correct the record in Parliament? Not to mention a longer term obligation to get the numbers right.
