The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, based in Fife, has recently been practising the urban combat skills it might need as part of the NATO Allied Reaction Force (ARF).

The urban combat training package comes ahead of the regiment’s deployment on planned NATO exercises throughout 2025.

The training started with developing the competencies and drills required to fight in an urban environment and tested their ability to enter and move decisively through rooms of buildings. In an enclosed environment, soldiers must be able to consider multiple scenarios that can change at any given time.

The training progressed from basic drills to moving into a building using simulation – mock rounds used for training. It ended with an assault on a building populated by an “enemy” force and a drone team conducted an aerial reconnaissance before the mock raid to provide the soldiers with situational awareness.

During the excise soldiers arrived on Jackals and by foot, confronted by boarded windows, booby traps and overgrown terrain.

The ARF is a high-readiness multi-national task force made up of 800,000 troops ready to deploy quickly to crises and threats to NATO allies. These could include disaster relief to security operations or warfighting.#SCOTSDG #BritishArmy #Scotland #training #Jackal

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Australian born British Army officer Major Brenden Wheeler was recently given the honour of performing the Australian National Anthem at Murrayfield Stadium.

Brenden is currently the Director of Music for The Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland (Band SCOTS) and has performed at many high-profile military ceremonial events but performing his homeland’s National Anthem for the Australian Rugby Team pulled at this heart.

He said:

“I have performed the British National Anthem on many occasions at sporting events and ceremonial events; whilst I do have a sense of pride when performing it, I see the buzz and excitement that all the musicians get when they are on the pitch representing their nation’s team.

For me, performing the Australian National Anthem whilst on the pitch next to my Nation’s team is something I have never dreamed of having whilst serving for the British Army. I felt incredibly proud.”

Brenden started studying music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Australia but won a scholarship to study in the UK where he finished his degree. He then enlisted into British Army in 2009, becoming a member of The Royal Corps of Army Music.

Band SCOTS primary role is in support of ceremonial operations and performing during community and defence engagement activity.

Complimenting the symbolic event marking the 25th Anniversary of the Scottish Parliament today were soldiers from @The_Scots @SCOTS_DG @ScotsGuards @2SCOTSP&Ds and @Band_SCOTS. The high-profile event, attended by Their Majesties The King and Queen, once again saw the @BritishArmy in Scotland at the forefront of ceremonial operations in Edinburgh.

The Army in Scotland today bid a fond farewell to Major General Alastair Bruce of Crionaich OBE DL VR as he went out with a ‘bang’ firing the iconic One O’clock Gun and taking his final Salute, as Governor of Edinburgh Castle.

Although the Royal Gun Salute, at Edinburgh Castle today honoured the 2nd Anniversary of the Accession of His Majesty The King, it was a poignant moment for General Alastair, because it was his last ceremonial event in this prestigious role.

BKA Coy, @The_Scots under the command of @OC_BKACoy  proudly formed the Guard of Honour to officially mark His Majesty The King’s arrival at Balmoral.

BKA Coy are renowned for their ceremonial presence in Scotland, with Royal Guard in Balmoral being one of their most privileged positions.

Shetland pony @Cpl_Cruachan_IV (no stranger to Balmoral) was also present.

@Band_SCOTS and The Pipes and Drums of the @RoyalCorpsofSignals, their first appearance at Balmoral, also performed at the ceremony.

In his first visit to Scotland as Chief of the General Staff (CGS), General Sir Roly Walker KCB DSO ADC Gen took the Salute at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on Monday 12 August. CGS also met serving and civilian personnel yesterday at the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow and today at HQ 51st Infantry Brigade and HQ Scotland at Redford Cavalry Barracks, Edinburgh. #EdinTattoo #edinburghcastle #britisharmy #salute #REMT
