Today, we remember and celebrate the 95th birthday of my grandmother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, a beacon of strength, resilience, and grace. Her leadership and courage in the face of a despotic dictator inspired a nation and paved the way out of our darkest night to the dawn of democracy in Pakistan. Delighted that my father Syed Qaim Ali Shah was given today Nishan'e Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest award.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah is the only surviving Parliamentarian who was amongst the framers of 1973 Constitution, as a member of the Constituent Assembly elected of 1970, and as a member of the committee that drafted the constitution.

He is senior most Parliamentarian in the country, recently elected as member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh for the Eighth time. Earlier he remained member of the National Assembly twice and as Senator once. So, this is his 11th tenure as member of Parliament / Provincial Assembly of Sindh, the longest service in Pakistan’s legislative houses.

Mr. Shah started his political career with his election as a member of basic democracy (BD member) in 1962. Later in mid 60s he served as Vice Chairman of Khairpur Municipality. Thus, he has completed 62 years in politics / public service, having served at all tiers – local, provincial and national level governance.

He served as Senior Minister in the first cabinet formed in 1972. In 1974, he was inducted as Minister of State of industries, and then elevated as Federal Minister in federal cabinet of Shaheed Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, with portfolios of Agrarian Management, Kashmir affairs and Northern Areas. He was also appointed President of PPP Sindh in 1972 and remained in this position at different times for longest period.

He is one of the few politicians in the country who remained steadfast with the political party and his principles. Starting in the 60s, he was part of the Council Muslim league, which along with other opposition parties, supported Ms. Fatima Jinnah in the Presidential election against General Ayub Khan, and voted for Ms. Jinnah in such election.
Mr. Shah joined Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) soon after its formation by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He is currently the senior most member of the PPP, and has remained member of its Executive Committee since 1972. He has remained with the party during most difficult and turbulent times after military takeover in 1977, suffered persecution, detention and made major contribution as part of team of Begum Nusrat Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto during Zia’s martial law. He was appointed President of Sindh PPP by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto in 1972 and remained head of Sindh PPP for the longest time and lead Sindh PPP during most of opposition movements, including MRD movement and other struggles of the party.
He was appointed Chief Minister of Sindh by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, when the democracy was revived after 1988 elections and remained CM Sindh three times for an aggregate period of 9 years. He also remained leader of opposition in Sindh Assembly in 1990.

As senior Minister in Sindh cabinet in 1972, he took the initiative of introducing Sindhi as a Provincial Language, alongwith Urdu, and he presented the relevant bill in the provincial Assembly. Although there was some resistance to this initiative from certain quarters, but ultimately all political sides accepted the principle of Sindhi being the provincial language along with Urdu.

Thar Coal Project
It was owing to his leadership and commitment together with support of President Zardari, that Thar Coal Project became a reality under a public private partnership. As a result, there has been huge investment in Thar of over $ 5 billion, and more is in pipeline, and thar coal based power is now not only the cheapest source of electricity but it saves huge amount of foreign exchange.

Today is Pakistan Resolution Day, the day to celebrate the republic, the day to for renewing the resolve to build the nation and strengthen the state. Grateful that the state will acknowledge my father’s contribution of 62 years of public service which includes his role in making the 1973 Constitution, his consistent struggles for democracy and his reform based public service as he will receive #NishaniImtiaz from PresidentAsifAliZardari.
