They had not been hacked, transferred, or spent. But the cryptographic keys required to access them were gone, leaving what would later be worth around $150 million visible to everyone and usable by no one

This is why I think GenLayer’s origin story matters far beyond one crypto dispute
Smart contracts are powerful when the world follows the expected path. They can hold assets, execute rules and enforce outcomes with extraordinary precision
But precision is not judgment
The moment reality becomes ambiguous, evidence conflicts, obligations are disputed or someone claims the agreement was not properly fulfilled, deterministic code reaches its boundary
What is needed after that boundary is not another transaction layer. It is an adjudication layer capable of reading evidence, interpreting intent and reaching a decision without forcing every digital dispute into a slow and prohibitively expensive legal system
That is the deeper idea I see in @GenLayer:
not replacing the guarantees of code, but giving agreements somewhere to go when code alone is no longer enough
The future of onchain commerce will not only depend on how reliably agreements execute
It will also depend on what happens when they break

What followed exposed a deeper problem than lost keys
StakeHound and Fireblocks presented conflicting accounts of who was responsible for generating, securing and backing up the key shares. Resolving that dispute required interpreting agreements, reconstructing events, examining evidence and judging whether each party had fulfilled its obligations
None of those questions had a simple deterministic answer
And the only available path was the traditional legal system: years of proceedings, enormous legal expenses and millions spent before a meaningful resolution could even be reached

During the @GenLayer livestream, with @raskovsky also joining the conversation, @liutenkos from @Yellow presented those unused resources as the starting point for a new market
Instead of letting that remaining capacity expire, users could direct it toward larger research projects, get paid for the work completed, and recover part of their subscription costs
@EdgarsNemse takes the idea one step further
The model could begin with collaborative open source projects, with @GenLayerLabs evaluating each contribution and rewarding it based on the value actually created
Later, the same structure could expand to commercial projects
