With leopards & tigers, running makes you a target. Standing makes you a threat.

When you turn your back & run in front of a big cat, it activates the predatory instinct. Running away signals vulnerability --> the same visual cue that prey gives before a chase begins.

This is so hardwired that even running past a tiger or leopard enclosure in a zoo will often trigger a chase response along the fence line.

The reverse is equally true.

Standing tall, facing forward, and holding your ground completely disrupts the predator-prey dynamic. Leopards assess risk based on the size, posture and directness of gaze of what faces them.

A confident, upright human facing them doesn't register as prey --> it registers as a potential threat. The neural network shifts from predatory mode to self-preservation mode.

This is exactly what you see in this video.

With increasing forest fragmentation, human-leopard conflicts are becoming more frequent. Leopards, more than tigers, are adaptable to human-dominated landscapes, which brings them closer to villages and habitations.

When a leopard ventures into a settlement and a crowd gathers, the situation becomes dangerous, not because the leopard is hunting, but because it is cornered.

Cortisol and adrenaline spike. The leopard is not attacking out of aggression --> it is fighting its way toward an escape route.

The crowd provokes the attack it fears.
