One thing that the UK should improve quickly in social care is children's residential care.

I doubt most people realise: it costs more than £300k per year on average to look after a child in a children's home. There is one recorded instance where it cost £63k per week (not a typo). To put that into context, the average person in the UK (freelance/employed/other) earns £566k over their lifetime in today's money.

You may even say high expenditure was ok if it was an utterly exceptional experience for children, but care leavers on average report lower happiness or life satisfaction than others.

They're also often rushed into leaving care at 18 - the £300k per year stops. One day almost £1k per day is spent on their wellbeing, the next day it is not - they may get a one-off £3k grant, and have to fend for themselves on £10 per day universal credit.

85% of the industry in the UK is run under a private firms. Again, that would be wonderful if the power of the market meant that kids were getting a great experience and a positive future. But overall the current model is not benefitting the children who we as a state look after enough, despite spending £300k per year to try and give them a good life.

Horizon 22 is the highest viewing point in London (833ft, as opposed to The Shard’s 800ft), but it’s also completely FREE to visit and they don’t insist on you folding your buggy down either.

Once your ears have popped from the lifts that get you to the top at 26ft per second, you can spend as much time as you like up there, and there’s also no poxy gift shop to navigate at the exit.

You have to book in advance online, or you can ‘walk up’ on the day and scan a QR code to see availability. We managed to get a 3pm visit after arriving at 12.30pm, which gave us enough time to wander around and have lunch first. Loads of people have said positive things about the walk-up system, but it seems like a good idea to get there as early in the day as possible to scan the QR code as slots go quickly.

Also, did I mention that it was FREE? Like totally. I know I’ve posted this post about 245 times now but every time I put it back up at least one person says ‘wow I didn’t know about this.’
