The Cuerdale hoard dates to about 905, when it was buried for safe-keeping along the banks of the River Ribble in Cuerdale. It consists of more than 8500 pieces of silver. Its size suggests it was a war chest, and its contents indicate it was amassed by Vikings from around the Irish Sea.

The coins in the hoard came from mints in England, Europe and the Islamic world, reflecting the extensive contacts of the Vikings who collected them. Coins were valued by the Vikings for their weight in silver, and would have been used interchangeably with other silver objects, including ingots and arm-rings.
