Ethiopia was never colonized.
For much of its history, it was one of the poorest countries on the continent.
Meanwhile, Vietnam was colonized by the French, devastated by decades of war, and is now on its way to serious economic prosperity.
If colonialism were the answer to why Africa is poor, Ethiopia should be rich and Vietnam should be broke. Neither is true.

Employee: I have been hitting every target for 2 years. What exactly is the issue?
Manager: The issue is not your performance.
Employee: Then what is it?
Manager: You have been described as difficult.
Employee: Difficult how?
Manager: You raise concerns. You question unrealistic deadlines. You push back when people cross boundaries.
Employee: So I am being punished for saying the culture is broken?
Manager: We just do not think you are the right fit anymore.
Employee: Even though I am one of the highest performers on the team?
Manager: Performance is only one part of the equation.
Employee: Right. The other part is staying quiet while management creates a toxic mess.
Manager: We need people who protect team harmony.
Employee: That is a funny way to describe protecting dysfunction.
Manager: We have made our decision.
Employee: Of course. Fixing the environment would require leadership. Firing me is just easier.
Too many companies would rather fire a productive employee than fix the toxic environment pushing good people to the edge.
The problem is not always performance.
Sometimes the problem is that one employee refuses to normalize dysfunction.
Bad cultures do not remove the chaos.
They remove the person who pointed it out.
