Today kicks off my first week of freelancing! I’m excited to dig into stories on issues I’m passionate about — our climate! food systems! art communities! — in my home bases of North Florida and Bulgaria.
I'm also available for your design/layout/email newsletter projects~
The merging of the EU’s asylum and carceral legal systems under the broad umbrella of national security makes it easier to detain asylum seekers without clarifying what threat they pose, @AshiraMorris writes. https://t.co/LLTBbk7R4M
“The monuments had an authoritative power under communism.
They have a haunted power after, animated by the future they so confidently anticipated but that did not arrive.”

There are so many pieces of Bulgaria's contemporary art history in this show that I'd only read about because there isn't a permanent museum collection showcasing them. It was a delight to see them myself, and to write about the show @Artforum:

Lordy – Sen. @DannyBurgessFL just filed a broad local preemption bill, banning local govts from adopting “laws, regulations, rules, or policies” relating to:
- water quality or quantity
- pollution control
- wetlands https://t.co/Gqnxv06zP4
#Florida@GovRonDeSantis "promised additional funding for water quality ...but so far the bills that have emerged from committee...provide temporary fixes that environmental advocates say don’t address the root causes of problems." https://t.co/1fNHHMzNSJ via @AshiraMorris
What does it look like for a museum to truly share narrative power with the communities whose culture and history are on display?
I talked to the co-curators of @McrMuseum's new South Asia gallery about their experience doing just that:

The Florida Board of Medicine will meet in half an hour for a public hearing on the trans youth health care ban. Let's see if public comment goes any better than... this... https://t.co/i3WjaFmqjo
Tallahassee *does* has amazing access to nature by bike via the St Marks Trail — but I would love to see the same level of infrastructure for daily life navigation, not just weekend recreation. Would love for more people to feel comfortable biking the city!
Catch me shouting out car-free living in Tallahassee (and identifying bookstores as a walking-distance essential) thanks to @schmangee —

Tallahassee could do a lot better for anyone who gets around without a car, by choice or not. Even recent big road overhauls like the Gaines St. redevelopment didn't add bike infrastructure (painting a bike with a double chevron on asphalt does not count).
@RTB_Cheerful At least 11 states have pending climate ed bills, so now is a good time to look at WA as a model. Some keys to their success:
- focusing on local climate impacts & local climate solutions
- respecting teachers as learners
- sharing lesson plans
School-age kids are living the impacts of climate change, but WA is the only state currently funding K-12 climate education — specifically training teachers to bring the topic to their classrooms.
Happy to share my first story of 2023 for @RTB_Cheerful:

Somehow we have landed here, another end of another year! And maybe the end of this platform! What at time, but I am once again looking back and feeling pretty proud of what I’ve done. 🪡
Just speaking it into the universe that I want to spend more time next year creating things that feel weird and risky and experimental. I want to feel inspired and then act on that inspiration.
